A two-fer of John Carpenter’s 1980 The Fog and Val Lewton/Mark Robson’s 1943 The Seventh Victim\, both of which brilliantly use off-screen space to create their terrifyingly atmospheric worlds. In The Fog (the first “Great Pumpkin” ever written about in Reverse Shot)\, a small California seaside town is menaced by an age-old curse; in The Seventh Victim\, a young woman tries to track down her missing sister and discovers she has been taken in by a cabal of secret Satanists. Queens Historical Society representatives will formally hand over the bronze plaque to Charlie Sub\, the son of Coventry founder Paul Sub and frontman of indie rock band Charlie Sub & Sound Dogs at a reception October 30\, 2024 7PM at Sanger Hall (48-20 Skillman Avenue\, New York\, New York 11104). The Queensmark is given to structures in the borough with historic\, architectural or cultural significance following a meticulous study by QHS Preservation Committee which includes an architect\, an architectural historian\, researchers\, and a landmarked Historic District leader. Although no longer in operation\, Coventry is being awarded as the legendary club where renowned bands like the Ramones\, the New York Dolls\, KISS\, and Blondie played their earliest gigs. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception celebrating ASMA: Ideal Space for Music and In Practice: Tony Chrenka. \nASMA: Ideal Space for Music\nOn view Oct 31\, 2024 – Feb 3\, 2025 \nSculptureCenter is pleased to present the first institutional exhibition in the United States of artist duo ASMA. Their sculpturally-rooted works stretch the possibilities of materials such as silicon\, resin\, bronze\, steel\, or glass\, often blending artisan craft techniques with synthetic and industrial processes. Their research methodology integrates intuitive responsiveness to a site with conceptual explorations found within the arenas of mythology\, psychology\, and posthumanism\, viewed through a metamodern lens. \nFor their SculptureCenter commission\, ASMA presents Ideal Space for Music\, a shattered narrative tapestry with sculptural characters whose presence evokes theatricality. Drawing on the metaphorical capacity of SculptureCenter’s lower level as a place of subconscious nature\, works in the exhibition will open a conversation around desire and fragmentation. ASMA explores the relationship of desire with the development of language and written literature through the image of joint articulation and within the symbol of ball-jointed dolls (BJDs\, as they are referred to by their manufacturers). The exhibition will feature a newly commissioned series of reflective sculptures\, detailed with low-relief compositions. Accompanying these works\, a group of dramatic sculptural stagings featuring constructed characters will revisit the Frankensteinian notion of disintegration\, evoking themes of contamination and hybridity in the process of self-becoming. \nIn Practice: Tony Chrenka\nOn view Oct 31\, 2024 – Dec 22\, 2024 \nTony Chrenka’s studio practice pursues questions of work and perceptions of the progression of time through photography\, drawing\, and installation. At SculptureCenter\, Chrenka will present a series of wooden relief sculptures and a related wall treatment in a work that posits sculpture as an ongoing manipulation of presence and absence in space over bounded intervals of time.
