SUMMARY:Open Call for Ceramics - "Shardeology Making with the Future in Mind"
DESCRIPTION:In the distant future\, archeologists will unearth our fragments\, and try to decipher our chaotic\, transformative era. There will be bits of phones\, a lot of plastic. Will the clay shards surprise them? Clay is experiencing a vibrant renaissance – from functional to sculptural\, wood fired to painstaking pattern\, pinched to 3D printed. \nThis exhibition intends to embrace the whole of this moment’s ceramic universe. There is no hierarchy\, no excluded category. What have you made that is extraordinary? What shard do you want to leave behind? Let’s explore together. \nBackground of the curator: \nEric Lawrence received an MFA in film from Columbia University in 1983\, and went to work on commercials and television.\nEventually\, he came to his senses\, and started studying clay at Parsons School of Design\, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts\, which led to making and teaching ceramics all around New York for over 25 years. \nHe has shown with Long Island City Artists\, at Gallery North in Setauket\, LI\, and on Governor’s Island. He most recently exhibited earlier this year in Portal: Shifting Landscapes\, a show organized by 4Heads and ChaShaMa.  He has maintained a studio space at Brickhouse Ceramic Art Center in Long Island City since it opened.

SUMMARY:An evening with CFGNY\, Kerstin Brätsch\, and Contemporary Art Library
DESCRIPTION:SculptureCenter hosts a special evening with Contemporary Art Library to celebrate the release of Kerstin Brätsch’s Contemporary Art Quarterly archive\, with an activation by CFGNY and a performance by VIOLENCE. Drinks will be served by KAYA. The Contemporary Art Quarterly archive offers an exhaustive documentation history of Brätsch's work as well as the work of the various collectives in which she has been a core member. \nKerstin Brätsch’s artistic practice centers the idea of painting\, oscillating between a conceptual analysis of the medium and a devotion to painterly processes. Her interest in the power of the unseen world\, manifest in an interrogation of the occult\, is expressed through painting\, performance\, and collaboration. Brätsch uses painting to question the ways in which the body can be expressed psychologically\, physically\, and socially. Through this focus on the medium—via myriad aesthetic and conceptual approaches—she is seeking to destabilize and expand upon the very definition of painting. A central subject for her is the relationship between painting and subjectivity\, a connection that is softened\, subverted\, and sometimes parodied in her work. This becomes particularly evident in her engagement with the metaphysical strands of abstraction and the animistic qualities of painting. To question the agency of painting and engage with it as an expanded field\, she invites artisanal practices (including stained glass\, paper marbling\, and stucco marmo) and sustained collaborations into the equation\, moving from the personal to the collective in order to question the medium’s largely uncontested history. Brätsch was part of the group exhibition Leopords in the Temple at SculptureCenter in 2010 (in addition to her creative alliances with master craftspeople). \nIn addition to her creative alliances with master craftspeople\, Brätsch founded the collaborative DAS INSTITUT with German artist Adele Röder in 2007. Since 2010\, she has been working with the American artist Debo Eilers under the moniker KAYA. \nFounded in 2016 and based in NYC\, the artist collective CFGNY continually returns to the term "vaguely Asian": an understanding of racial identity as a specific cultural experience combined with the experience of being perceived as other. In addition to using fashion as a readymade\, CFGNY’s practice spans mediums such as video\, performance\, installation\, and sculpture\, researching the ways in which material assemblage and reproduction play a part in the formation and racialization of such “vaguely Asian” identities. CFGNY is uninterested in representing what it means to be “Asian” in the singular; instead\, it encourages the visualization of the countless ways one is able to be in the plural. CFGNY is composed of Daniel Chew\, Ten Izu\, Kirsten Kilponen\, and Tin Nguyen. Their project at SculptureCenter in 2023 included a collaboration with KAYA. \nContemporary Art Library is the resource of record for documentation of contemporary art. A free\, non-profit database of nearly 1 million images\, videos\, and documents\, the Library allows anyone to easily study the work of artists. Their project Contemporary Art Quarterly publishes four deep archives on the histories of important artists to the Library each year.

SUMMARY:Geraldine Hughes Presents: "Unreconciled"
DESCRIPTION:New from Geraldine Hughes and writers Jay Sefton and Mark Basquill comes an the unflinchingly honest and powerful Unreconciled\, the true story of a 13-year-old boy who has his sights set on becoming an actor and the priest who exploits his love of theatre to abuse him. From the alcohol-drenched Irish suburbs of 1980s Philadelphia to a sterile law office in Manhattan\, this play is about discovering your voice and the power of using it. \n  \nEach performance will be followed by a brief talkback and Q&A:\n– Wednesday\, September 25: David Clohessy—Victims advocate and former director of SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) for 30 years. \n– Thursday\, September 26: Marci Hamilton—Founder and CEO of CHILD USA and the leading expert on clergy sex abuse and child sex abuse statutes of limitation. Author of Justice Denied and God vs. the Gavel. \n\n“Sefton put on an acting clinic\, inhabiting 12 different characters. It all added up to one of the most amazing pieces of acting I’ve ever seen. It was also funny as hell and very moving.”\n—Steve Pfarrer\, Daily Hampshire Gazette \n“An extraordinary work of art on the impossible topic.” \n—Terry McKiernan (Founder & President Bishop Accountability) \n

SUMMARY:Who's Afraid of Red\, Yellow\, and Blue?
DESCRIPTION:Who's Afraid of Red\, Yellow\, and Blue?\nCurated by Ellen Hackl Fagan\, Founder and Director\, ODETTA Gallery\nConversations between artists have always been a healthy antithesis to the pervasive myth that art is made in a solitary environment. In New York City\, these conversations are promoted in robust arts communities that telegraph ultimately throughout a global art world. \nIn 1966 Barnett Newman began a series of monumental paintings titled “Who’s Afraid of Red\, Yellow\, and Blue?” In his response to Ab Ex painting\, he chose to strip painting of any need for narrative\, and instead\, allowed color to be the sole subject of these works. The ginormous scale of this series drove the point home further\, enveloping the viewer in Red\, Yellow\, and Blue\, one by one. This step into Minimalist Abstraction was so radical that it caused several very public assaults against these works over the latter half of the 20th century. In addition to infuriating some\, it inspired many other artists. His works propelled Conceptualism into becoming the next wave of contemporary art\, lasting and influencing generations of artists. The most sublime response to the question “ Who’s Afraid of Red\, Yellow\, and Blue?\,” for this curator\, was Robert Irwin's piece\, “Whose Afraid of Red\, Yellow\, and Blue?”\, created in 2006\, shown at Pace Gallery in Chelsea. Irwin surrounded us in ever larger panels of reflective red\, yellow\, and blue\, and installed them on the floor and suspended them from the ceiling\, offering the viewer an immersive experience in both primary colors and the full color spectrum due to the reflective nature of the panels. \nThe question is\, are you afraid of Red\, Yellow\, and Blue? Whether you stay clear of these colors in your artwork or whether you embrace them\, for this exhibition we'd love a variety of fearless approaches (all mediums welcome) to this challenge\, thus continuing the advancement of a new century of contemporary art.

SUMMARY:SculptureCenter Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception celebrating Álvaro Urbano: TABLEAU VIVANT and In Practice: Bastien Gachet. \nÁlvaro Urbano: TABLEAU VIVANT \nÁlvaro Urbano has been engaged in conversation and collaboration with various entities across different times and places\, including artists\, writers\, and architects; plants and animals; buildings\, ruins and other human and other-than-human beings. For his project at SculptureCenter\, Urbano focuses on a potential ruin\, or a ruin in progress – a public artwork by the American sculptor Scott Burton (1939–1989) that was rescued from destruction and now faces an uncertain future. The work was originally installed in the lobby of the Equitable Center building in midtown Manhattan in 1986 until it was dismantled in 2020\, victim to a renovation. \nThe work\, titled Atrium Furnishment was one of many works for public or semi-public space that Burton – a sculptor\, performance artist\, and writer critical to New York scenes in the 1970s and ’80s – realized throughout his life before he died of HIV-related illness in 1989. Though elements of related exterior works for Equitable Center remain in place\, roughly half of his site-specific projects have been removed or modified since initially completed. \nAt SculptureCenter\, Urbano will display roughly half of the original elements of Burton’s Atrium Furnishment. Referencing the work’s original orientation\, Urbano’s new disposition will radiate across SculptureCenter’s ground floor space\, altering the entire gallery and producing a topographic landscape. Burton’s public art projects always appeared as chimeras that mixed aspects of sculpture and furniture. By re-segmenting and re-organizing the work’s elements across a new site\, Urbano directs attention towards Burton’s chosen materials and other inner physical dynamics and histories embedded in the artwork. \nIn Practice: Bastien Gachet \nBastien Gachet’s work uses new approaches to fabrication and installation to draw out the immanent\, emergent\, and durational qualities of art. Gachet meticulously hand-produces objects and installation elements across media\, subtly elaborating on and bending parallel categories that have been used consistently\, if inadequately\, to define recent art: the “pre-intentional” and intentional; the found and the made; the real and the fake\, expanding into notions of the “fake-real” and the “fake-fake” (in the artist’s terminology). In his forthcoming exhibition at SculptureCenter\, Gachet collects and organizes these contrasting modes into what he has called an “object-based dramaturgy\,” a structure of meaning opening itself across unsettlingly constructed and resonant environments.
