SUMMARY:SculptureCenter Winter Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception celebrating R.I.P. Germain: Avangarda\,  In Practice: Claudia Pagès\, and Small World Cinema. \nR.I.P. Germain: Avangarda\nJan 25–Mar 25\, 2024 \nSculptureCenter is pleased to present the first exhibition in the United States of R.I.P. Germain. UK-based\, R.I.P. Germain investigates how structures of exclusion lead to the creation of para-institutional spaces\, practices\, and modes of sociality and solidarity. His practice explores how a lack of access to financial\, legal\, and other forms of state-sanctioned resources foment support systems that respond to the needs of underserved and excluded communities. \nIn New York\, R.I.P. Germain will present a series of newly commissioned sculptures in the guise of facades and storefronts. R.I.P. Germain’s presentation will expand his recent explorations of “false fronts”– or spaces that present themselves in one way but function in another. Offering an appearance of banality\, they frequently mask an illegal operation. Liminal and precarious spaces of trade\, the fronts also run as spaces of care and sociality. These engineered facsimiles represent amalgams of frontages for “baggy spaces” (as coined by the artist and the activist-curator Helen Starr)\, places “found in every city\, governed by their own logics — market and moral\, they function as ways to serve a community need that otherwise remains unmet.” These conditions generate specified ways to access and operate within them that cut across typical social hierarchies and stratification. In hyperlocal terms that interrogate what it means to be “in the know\,” R.I.P. Germain’s work asks whether such semi-secrecy produces community\, reproduces the destructive dynamics of the outside world\, or allows for other systems of sociality and value to develop. \nIn Practice: Claudia Pagès\nJan 25–Feb 19\, 2024 \nClaudia Pagès’s work circulates word\, body\, music\, and movement in multiple directions\, tracing the continuity of logistics systems (like shipping and transport) alongside legal language and proceedings in hypnotic video installations. Pagès refers to the subjects of her work as “containment architectures\,” upholding power through the flow of goods and capital. Pagès’s new work for SculptureCenter is a video installation sited between two locations that mark the “birth of bureaucracy” – ancient caves tallied with trade markers and the paper's entrance to Europe through the Silk Route. \nSmall World Cinema\nJan 25–Mar 25\, 2024\nIn collaboration with Taipei Fine Arts Museum\, SculptureCenter welcomes Small World Cinema\, a presentation of moving image works from the Taipei Biennial 2023 – Small World\, to New York City. \n“Small World\,” the theme of the 13th edition of the Taipei Biennial\, suggests both a promise of greater control over one’s own life\, and a threat of isolation from a larger community. As the curators suggest\, our world can become smaller as we grow closer to one another\, but also as we grow apart\, and Taipei Biennial 2023 – Small World takes place within such a suspended state. \nDivided into four programs and spread across SculptureCenter’s lower level galleries\, Small World Cinema includes works made between 1981 and 2023 by Tekla Aslanishvili; Yin-Ju Chen; Samia Halaby; Li Yi-Fan; Artemio Narro; Ipeh Nur; Ellen Pau; Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze; Jen Liu; Jumana Manna; Bahar Noorizadeh in collaboration with Rudá Babau and Waste Paper Opera (Klara Kofen\, James Oldham\, Gary Zhexi Zhang\, Anna Palmer); Oleksiy Radynski; John Smith; Su Yu-Hsin; Wang Ya-Hui; C. Spencer Yeh; and Zhou Tao (as of Jan 11). \n  \nSponsors\nGenerous support for R.I.P. Germain: Avangarda is provided by ARTNOIR and Micki Meng. Special thanks to Neon Fab Studios\, New York. \nIn Practice 2023 is made possible by the generosity of the Elaine Graham Weitzen Foundation for Fine Arts. \nIn Practice 2023 is made possible by the generosity of the Elaine Graham Weitzen Foundation for Fine Arts. The Foundation’s support for SculptureCenter’s annual open call exhibition reflects Elaine Graham Weitzen’s (1920-2017) lifelong commitment to emerging artists and her exuberant support of new ideas in art. Weitzen served as a devoted Trustee of SculptureCenter from 1987 to 2017. \nMajor support for the In Practice program is provided by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. The In Practice program is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nLeadership support for SculptureCenter’s exhibitions and programs is provided by Carol Bove\, Barbara and Andrew Gundlach\, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation\, Jill and Peter Kraus\, and Teiger Foundation. Death's daughter rides the wind on a horse made of smoke and her face bears the skull marks of her father. Her origin story is a tale of retribution as beautifully lush as it is unflinchingly savage. \n

SUMMARY:Take Root Presents: Cori Kresge &Stephanie Saywell
DESCRIPTION:Advance sale tickets: $20 onlineTickets purchased at door: $25 cash or card \nTicket link: https://danceentropy.networkforgood.com/events/59206-cori-kresge-stephanie-saywell-take-root-at-green-space \nAbout the Works: \nCori Kresge\nSeraphim Airlines\, a 30 minute dance work choreographed by Cori Kresge. Performed by Mariah Anton-Arters\, Sienna Blaw\, Miguel Angel Guzman\, Cori Kresge\, and Kristin Swiat. Quoting gestures from airline attendant safety demos\, elevated by rigorous physicality and intentional precarity\, five dancers embody roles as supernatural stewards offering choreography in case of an emergency. Original music composed by Eric Pitra. Costumes by Susan Julian. \nStephanie Saywell\nThere Was A House\, choreographed and created by Stephanie Saywell\, is inspired by themes pulled from Hansel & Gretel and navigates the sea of stories we tell each other about ourselves through a queer lens. Through heightened text\, intricate character work\, and the athletic conquering and division of space\, three performers dive into a physical exploration of how stories are disseminated\, shared\, edited\, censored\, voiced\, and left untold within the histories of our bodies. What causes us to leave home? What delight and terror do we discover in the forest of other people? And what bread crumbs lead us back? There Was A House is performed by Hallie Chametzky\, Lucia Flexer-Marshall\, and Aurora Vaughan\, and features voiceover by Healy Knight and costume design by Hunter Dowell.

SUMMARY:Building a Better World - MLK No School Day Camp
DESCRIPTION:MLK had a dream to make the world a better place. In today's camp\, we will focus on Building a Better World – through Robotics! Campers are challenged to think critically about the world around them. As students identify problems\, they will think creatively about how they can use technology to inspire change. Through a series of games\, LEGO mosaics\, engineering challenges\, and lots of laughs\, students will end the day with a new Robotic that aims to make the world a better place. We all have a dream – What's Yours? \nYour child will learn the fundamentals of programming while navigating through programming instructions to make their inventions come alive. Students will work in groups to create robotic models that help to better the world. When building without instructions\, children are challenged to think creatively both on a large and small scale. As they brainstorm the purpose of their model and troubleshoot building issues\, they will practice crucial problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

SUMMARY:Real World Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Snapology’s Real World Robotics focuses on the real-life applications of robotics. In this program\, your engineer will explore the basics of robotics while building some amazing & helpful devices with their classmates! They will explore how robots help humans live in the modern world and explore other worlds! While working with a partner to complete various challenges\, your student will be taught how to effectively utilize sensors\, how different mechanical components work in their robots\, and how programming is a challenging but rewarding skill that they can master with just a little practice. We will support them in the development of their coding and building skills and inspire them with creative building challenges. \n : With each new model\, students will be given a program to operate their robotic build. They will learn how to read the program code and then fix an error to make the code useable. By fixing errors in a broken program code\, students will learn how to debug and modify their programs quickly. Whether making their build respond to various sensors\, adding loops and fun sounds\, or modifying variables\, children will learn valuable programming skills through the Scratch-based coding platform. \n : In each activity\, students will be asked to identify the key mechanical components used in each robotic model. They will complete this before they ever build the model so they better understand how the pieces work together in the final design. They will understand the importance and use of motors\, sensors\, gears\, axles\, their robot Hub and so much more. \n : An important component of this program is following verbal and written instructions. Throughout each lesson\, your student will be required to listen\, pick up on routines and follow instructions in order to complete the model and interact with their builds. The best part\, practicing this skill comes easy in this program because your student is having fun and supported each step of the way. \n : Small groups and peer partners are key components of Snapology's educational approach. We emphasize positive teamwork skills and constantly work to develop healthy\, respectful collaborations between students. Through team projects and fun partner experiences\, your student will become more cognizant of how to interact with their peers in a respectful and productive way

SUMMARY:Developing Engineers
DESCRIPTION:Drop in Days or Full Term Available \nIs your student inquisitive\, a problem-solver\, a big-thinker\, a tinkerer\, a puzzler\, or a budding engineer? If so\, they’re the perfect fit for Snapology’s Developing Engineers: Mechanical Masterminds program! This program gives your student the tools they need to understand mechanical movement through the foundations of simple machines\, physics\, and engineering design. They will see moving parts up-close as they follow instructions to build various machines\, then use the models to develop new design ideas\, test out physics concepts\, and even play games with their partners and classmates. Whether they are the creative-constructive type or prefer the inquisitive-deconstructive way of learning\, this program is sure to spark their interests! \n \, \, : By following our building instructions and examining the models that are made\, your child will learn how to design simple and complex machines and use things like gears\, pulleys\, wheels & axles\, lever\, and cranks to build their own models. They will learn how different configurations of these parts can create unique movement guided by laws of physics and will be encouraged to experiment with their builds to create new design possibilities. \n : Building a sturdy\, reliable structure is a fundamental aspect of engineering. In this program\, students will explore different methods for creating a model that is both strong and functional. As they face building challenges when testing their designs\, they will be positively encouraged to think critically and use teamwork to solve engineering problems. / : Small groups and peer partners are key components of Snapology’s classroom approach. We emphasize positive teamwork skills in our programs and constantly work to develop healthy\, respectful collaborations between students.
