DESCRIPTION:About the Works: \nMelanie Holm\nEve Song\, a song cycle by American composer Jake Heggie with texts by Philip Littell\, is a contemporary retelling of the creation story from Eve’s perspective. Heggie’s music blends classical\, jazz\, and musical theater idioms together to create a unique contemporary soundscape that highlights Eve’s emotionally charged journey. Her story is alive and well\, in every being who seeks knowledge over comfort\, justice over blind ignorance\, and in every human being who has been shunned for seeking truth over blind ignorance. Despite continued attempts to shame her into silence\, Eve’s legacy lives on\, continually creating\, evolving\, and growing. \nJeeno Joseph Nadanam Collective\nBharatanatyam is an Indian classical dance from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is an art form which heavily utilizes various Indian languages such as Tamil from Tamil Nadu\, Kannada from Karnataka\, Telugu from Andhra Pradesh\, and Hindi from Northern India as well as their respective musical compositions and texts. As a first generation Malayali – American born to parents who emigrated from Kerala to New York\, I’ve often felt a lack of representation for the Malayalam language within the Bharatanatyam repertoire. Through this work I hope to explore the beauty of Malayalam musical compositions\, poetry\, culture and rhythms through the traditional Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam.

DESCRIPTION:The Queensbridge (QB) Photo Collective is a group of female photographers\, all over the age of 65\, who live at the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City\, New York. The Queensbridge Houses is the nation's largest public funded housing complex\, home to over 7\,000 residents from diverse backgrounds and cultures. During the last four years\, the QB Collective\, working with teaching artists from Five Corners Collective\, Inc. and support from the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement\, has used photography to portray Queensbridge as a vibrant and resilient community – a community whose voice has value and should be heard. Join us for our opening reception\, February 1st from 6-9PM!

DESCRIPTION:At Court 16 we take a holistic approach to teaching tennis. Our coaches guide each player through a progressive curriculum that emphasizes building a strong technical foundation for the long-term benefit of the player. We believe that it's not a race to hit a certain type of ball or play on a larger court\, but rather embarking on a journey to develop a deep understanding of the game that will benefit players throughout their lives. We understand that each child is unique and has their own learning style. Age is the starting point for placing children in the appropriate group\, but our coaches also make recommendations based on each individual child's progress.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception celebrating R.I.P. Germain: Avangarda\,  In Practice: Claudia Pagès\, and Small World Cinema. \nR.I.P. Germain: Avangarda\nJan 25–Mar 25\, 2024 \nSculptureCenter is pleased to present the first exhibition in the United States of R.I.P. Germain. UK-based\, R.I.P. Germain investigates how structures of exclusion lead to the creation of para-institutional spaces\, practices\, and modes of sociality and solidarity. His practice explores how a lack of access to financial\, legal\, and other forms of state-sanctioned resources foment support systems that respond to the needs of underserved and excluded communities. \nIn New York\, R.I.P. Germain will present a series of newly commissioned sculptures in the guise of facades and storefronts. R.I.P. Germain’s presentation will expand his recent explorations of “false fronts”– or spaces that present themselves in one way but function in another. Offering an appearance of banality\, they frequently mask an illegal operation. Liminal and precarious spaces of trade\, the fronts also run as spaces of care and sociality. These engineered facsimiles represent amalgams of frontages for “baggy spaces” (as coined by the artist and the activist-curator Helen Starr)\, places “found in every city\, governed by their own logics — market and moral\, they function as ways to serve a community need that otherwise remains unmet.” These conditions generate specified ways to access and operate within them that cut across typical social hierarchies and stratification. In hyperlocal terms that interrogate what it means to be “in the know\,” R.I.P. Germain’s work asks whether such semi-secrecy produces community\, reproduces the destructive dynamics of the outside world\, or allows for other systems of sociality and value to develop. \nIn Practice: Claudia Pagès\nJan 25–Feb 19\, 2024 \nClaudia Pagès’s work circulates word\, body\, music\, and movement in multiple directions\, tracing the continuity of logistics systems (like shipping and transport) alongside legal language and proceedings in hypnotic video installations. Pagès refers to the subjects of her work as “containment architectures\,” upholding power through the flow of goods and capital. Pagès’s new work for SculptureCenter is a video installation sited between two locations that mark the “birth of bureaucracy” – ancient caves tallied with trade markers and the paper's entrance to Europe through the Silk Route. \nSmall World Cinema\nJan 25–Mar 25\, 2024\nIn collaboration with Taipei Fine Arts Museum\, SculptureCenter welcomes Small World Cinema\, a presentation of moving image works from the Taipei Biennial 2023 – Small World\, to New York City. \n“Small World\,” the theme of the 13th edition of the Taipei Biennial\, suggests both a promise of greater control over one’s own life\, and a threat of isolation from a larger community. As the curators suggest\, our world can become smaller as we grow closer to one another\, but also as we grow apart\, and Taipei Biennial 2023 – Small World takes place within such a suspended state. \nDivided into four programs and spread across SculptureCenter’s lower level galleries\, Small World Cinema includes works made between 1981 and 2023 by Tekla Aslanishvili; Yin-Ju Chen; Samia Halaby; Li Yi-Fan; Artemio Narro; Ipeh Nur; Ellen Pau; Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze; Jen Liu; Jumana Manna; Bahar Noorizadeh in collaboration with Rudá Babau and Waste Paper Opera (Klara Kofen\, James Oldham\, Gary Zhexi Zhang\, Anna Palmer); Oleksiy Radynski; John Smith; Su Yu-Hsin; Wang Ya-Hui; C.
