SUMMARY:Developing Engineers
DESCRIPTION:Drop in Days or Full Term Available \nIs your student inquisitive\, a problem-solver\, a big-thinker\, a tinkerer\, a puzzler\, or a budding engineer? If so\, they’re the perfect fit for Snapology’s Developing Engineers: Mechanical Masterminds program! This program gives your student the tools they need to understand mechanical movement through the foundations of simple machines\, physics\, and engineering design. They will see moving parts up-close as they follow instructions to build various machines\, then use the models to develop new design ideas\, test out physics concepts\, and even play games with their partners and classmates. Whether they are the creative-constructive type or prefer the inquisitive-deconstructive way of learning\, this program is sure to spark their interests! \n \, \, : By following our building instructions and examining the models that are made\, your child will learn how to design simple and complex machines and use things like gears\, pulleys\, wheels & axles\, lever\, and cranks to build their own models. They will learn how different configurations of these parts can create unique movement guided by laws of physics and will be encouraged to experiment with their builds to create new design possibilities. \n : Building a sturdy\, reliable structure is a fundamental aspect of engineering. In this program\, students will explore different methods for creating a model that is both strong and functional. As they face building challenges when testing their designs\, they will be positively encouraged to think critically and use teamwork to solve engineering problems. / : Small groups and peer partners are key components of Snapology’s classroom approach. We emphasize positive teamwork skills in our programs and constantly work to develop healthy\, respectful collaborations between students. Through group planning\, sharing of materials\, and fun partner experiences\, students become more cognizant of how to interact with their peers in a respectful and productive way.

SUMMARY:Real World Robotics
DESCRIPTION:Snapology’s Real World Robotics focuses on the real-life applications of robotics. In this program\, your engineer will explore the basics of robotics while building some amazing & helpful devices with their classmates! They will explore how robots help humans live in the modern world and explore other worlds! While working with a partner to complete various challenges\, your student will be taught how to effectively utilize sensors\, how different mechanical components work in their robots\, and how programming is a challenging but rewarding skill that they can master with just a little practice. We will support them in the development of their coding and building skills and inspire them with creative building challenges. \n : With each new model\, students will be given a program to operate their robotic build. They will learn how to read the program code and then fix an error to make the code useable. By fixing errors in a broken program code\, students will learn how to debug and modify their programs quickly. Whether making their build respond to various sensors\, adding loops and fun sounds\, or modifying variables\, children will learn valuable programming skills through the Scratch-based coding platform. \n : In each activity\, students will be asked to identify the key mechanical components used in each robotic model. They will complete this before they ever build the model so they better understand how the pieces work together in the final design. They will understand the importance and use of motors\, sensors\, gears\, axles\, their robot Hub and so much more. \n : An important component of this program is following verbal and written instructions. Throughout each lesson\, your student will be required to listen\, pick up on routines and follow instructions in order to complete the model and interact with their builds. The best part\, practicing this skill comes easy in this program because your student is having fun and supported each step of the way. \n : Small groups and peer partners are key components of Snapology's educational approach. We emphasize positive teamwork skills and constantly work to develop healthy\, respectful collaborations between students. Through team projects and fun partner experiences\, your student will become more cognizant of how to interact with their peers in a respectful and productive way

SUMMARY:Music for Healing
DESCRIPTION:Culture Lab LIC is proud to announce the debut of Music for Healing\, by multidisciplinary artist\, Angelica Olstad. Music for Healing is an immersive installation that combines the power of music with science-backed healing modalities. The project – backed by a $10\,000 NYSCA grant – explores new ways to connect through a set of different modalities and practices that explores the installation space as an opportunity to connect through a shared experience.  \n  \n"At Culture Lab LIC\, we believe in the power of art to inspire\, heal\, and unite communities\," said Artistic Director\, Tess Howsam. "With Music for Healing we are thrilled to provide a platform for exploring innovative approaches to wellness that are grounded in scientific research and accessible to all." \n  \nMusic for Healing will be featured as part of the Culture Lab LIC’s forthcoming exhibition\, “Shattered” which focuses on mental health. “The show aims to not only raise awareness for mental health issues but the importance of art as both a healing tool and outlet\,” said Dawn DeVito\, curator of Shattered. \nScheduled to run from May 2nd to June 2\, 2024\, Music for Healing is a unique collaboration between leading scientists\, musicians\, creative technologists\, and artists. Through a blend of soothing audiovisual displays\, filmed content showing people from the community meditating and dancing\, color therapy\, multichannel sound\, and guided audio meditations\, attendees will delve into the transformative potential of sound and music in promoting physical\, mental\, and emotional well-being. Also featured as part of the experience\, is the use of an EEG – an instrument for measuring brain activity in visitors. Once activated\, the EEG will impact the installation environment to create a tailored experience based on each unique visitor’s brain chemistry. This interactivity incentivizes participants to go deeper into the experience. \n  \nThe immersive soundscape that comprises the exhibition was written by Angelica Olstad with the intention of creating healing experiences for visitors. “I wanted to challenge the idea that music for healing needs to sound like you’re in a spa\,” says Olstad. “So I set to work with scientists to figure out the ideal beats per minute (BPM) and other musical characteristics needed to put visitors in a relaxed and healing state.” The resulting fifty-five minute composition is minimalist and introspective\, featuring piano and analog synths. The instrumental piece will be released as a companion piece to the installation as its own album titled\, “Music for Healing: Introspection” which will be available to stream on May 24th. \n  \nOlstad’s music was described as The Wire as\, “Openly appreciative of the constituents of a tradition whil at the same time calling fundamental assumptions into question”. Her musical style is minimalist in nature and often includes unconventional mediums including field recordings\, video art\, analog synths\, and soundscapes.  \n  \n“Music for Healing addresses increased feelings of isolation and loneliness in a post-Covid world\,” said artist Angelica Olstad. “This project is a culmination of my experiences as a community wellness teacher\, classically trained pianist\, and cultural producer. As a mixed-race artist\, I am committed to making wellness and arts experiences more accessible to a wider audience\, specifically\, BIPOC audiences who might not have access to traditional arts and wellness opportunities. My dream is for people to come to this space\, find a comforting place to heal and to want to come back to over and over again..” \n  \nThe artist partnered with a team of highly talented individuals and organizations from Donald Judd inspired pieces\, production at 100 Sutton Studios an Samples from Mars\, movement work by director Elena Vazintaris who’s worked with the likes of Chanel and Dior\, an sponsored by Arts Equity Group. Full credits list can be viewed HERE.  \n  \nIn partnership with Culture Lab LIC\, Music for Healing will also feature community programming through lectures\, live outdoor concerts\, free meditation and yoga classes accompanied by music and educational talks for schools. Programming will be designed with underserved populations in mind. Music for Healing invites visitors of all ages and backgrounds to explore\, engage\, and experience the transformative power of music in a welcoming and inclusive environment.  \n  \nMusic for Healing is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.   \n  \nFor more information on open hours and event information\, please visit Culture Lab LIC at https://www.culturelablic.org \n

SUMMARY:Mother Baby Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a nourishing workshop designed specifically for mothers like you. It's a chance to connect with other mamas and tap into your inner strength. Being a mother can be challenging\, but it's also incredibly rewarding\, especially when you're surrounded by others who understand and support you. \nMerlin Hann\, a fellow mama\, has created this workshop based on her own experiences during the early months of motherhood. It's a nurturing and judgment-free space where you can receive support\, share your journey\, and fully embrace the highs and lows of motherhood. And the best part? You can bring your little one along with you. New mamas are encouraged to bring their babies (birth – pre-crawling) for infant massage\, movement\, and bonding exercises. We also focus on restorative poses to help mamas cope with modified sleep schedules during this exciting and sometimes challenging time. Come join us\, with or without your babe\, and experience the love and acceptance that awaits you. Whether you're a new mom\, expecting a baby\, or a seasoned mama\, we believe that you deserve to be supported through every step of your motherhood journey. \nIf you're planning to bring your little one with you here are a few things to remember to pack:\n1. A blanket: Bring a soft blanket to place down when you're practicing gentle movements. This will provide a comfortable space for your baby to relax.\n2. Snacks: If your baby is bottle-fed or breastfeeding\, make sure to bring a prepared snack for them. We welcome both options to keep your little one nourished during the workshop.\n3. Diapers\, wipes\, and changing mat: It's always a good idea to have these essentials on hand in case of any accidents or diaper changes to ensure your baby stays clean and comfortable.\n4. Yoga mat (optional): If you prefer to have your own yoga mat\, feel free to bring one along. \nHowever\, if it's too much to carry\, don't worry! We'll be more than happy to provide you with one. \nThese items will ensure that you and your baby have a comfortable and enjoyable experience during the workshop. We can't wait to see you there! We will have some handcrafted tea for you & some snacks. We can't wait to see you there!

SUMMARY:Wonderful World of Wizards (Harry Potter Inspired)
DESCRIPTION:Ages 5-12 \nEnter the world of wizards and witches in Snapology's Wizarding program\, inspired by Harry Potter and other amazing wizards. In this program\, your child will be inundated by magical places like Hogwarts\, by creating castles and undergoing a special ceremony where they are sorted and use their own imagination to create secret rooms and a coat of arms! This class will spark their imaginations and encourage creative reasoning in new ways\, allowing them to build amazing things they have only dreamed of before! They’ll enjoy themselves so much\, you might think we have them under a spell! \nWHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN \n• Building a Stable Structure: Building a sturdy\, reliable structure is a fundamental aspect of engineering. In this program\, students will explore different methods for creating a brick model that is both\nstrong and functional. As they are given new building projects to complete\, they will be positively encouraged to think critically and use teamwork to solve engineering and design problems.\n• Creativity: Snapology’s Wonderful Wizards program encourages students to embrace their imagination and create familiar items with a unique\, personalized twist. By using visual aids\, holding creative classroom brainstorming sessions\, and providing basic building parameters\, students will be supported as they take creative risks and guided when they aren’t sure what to build next.\n• Presentation Skills & Cooperative Play: Presenting in front of others can be a stressful and overwhelming experience for young children\, but our program aims to help your child feel more comfortable when presenting in front of a class by having them explain their builds to peers in a safe and supportive way. When they’re not presenting they will be combining their individual builds and working with class to create a larger class creation that requires teamwork\, critical thinking\, and communication. Without communicating\, asking questions\, showing empathy and patience for their peers they will not be able to achieve group builds. \n : Drop off begins each day at 8:30am. For maximum efficiency\, we ask you to be punctual at arrival and dismissal times. Campers are required to bring in their own lunch\, 1 snack\, and a drink every day. Please pack lunches in paper bags or lunch coolers and put the child’s name on each bag. Snapology Day Camp is a “nut sensitive” environment. As we have several students with food allergies\, no peanut or tree nut products are permitted. Weather pending\, we will take the students to Murray Park mid morning to shake out the wiggles and play in the sunshine. The walk is about 4 minutes however if you would rather your child stay in the studio\, kindly let us know. Please view our Summer Camp Webpage for a hourly breakdown of activities.
