DESCRIPTION:Halloween on the Waterfront will be back on October 25 with the original Beetlejuice (1988) to end the season! \nGet your costumes ready for the biggest-ever celebration of the spooky season in LIC. We’re partnering with the PS/IS 78Q PTA\, P.S.384 PTA\, and Frank Ottomanelli’s by the Water to bring Halloween to the waterfront. From 4 to 6pm\, we are hosting our 3rd annual Halloween on the Waterfront at Frank Ottomanelli’s with a ton of great activities for kids. We will have trick or treating and pumpkin decorating! We’ll also host a costume contest starting at 5:30pm with winners in the best child\, adult\, and family costumes. Just after 6\, we’ll be screening the 1988 classic Beetlejuice on the Oval. All movies start at sunset. Bring your blankets early to get a good spot\, as last year several of the movie nights brought out over 1\,000 people.

DESCRIPTION:Join SculptureCenter for an art workshop that coincides with its fall group exhibition\, “to ignite our skin.” \n“to ignite our skin” artist Umico Niwa will lead a workshop for youth (8-12) that channels inner “Memory Palaces\,” personal spaces of meaning and identity. Participants are invited to build internal landscapes and place within them a mental sculpture. This symbolic object or Gremlin\, can represent an ideal self\, a grounding force\, a part of oneself to be released\, or a constellation of admired traits. The “Memory Palace” serves as a tool for reflection and an emotional sanctuary. \nParticipants are asked to prepare by bringing organic matter\, such as sticks and twigs\, a wrinkly apple\, a wilting bouquet\, the remains of a bee\, a snail shell\, big potatoes/small potatoes\, or a pitiful acorn to build their sculptures\, which can be taken home or added to Niwa’s installation in the exhibition. \nSpace is limited\, and advance registration is required. Please provide the participant’s name\, age\, and contact information for the day of the event. \nDue to the historic nature of our building\, this location is not fully ADA accessible. The event is located on a second-floor loft\, which is only reachable by stairs. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nUmico Niwa received her MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University\, Richmond\, in 2020. Rejecting Western notions of personhood\, Niwa considers alternative modes of existence\, unbridled by bodily restrictions or gender constructs. The forms that emerge in her work mirror and intersect the dynamics embedded in the structural concerns of transness\, examining the terms through which its status is constituted. For SculptureCenter\, she will present a new installation that uses light\, packed earth\, moisture\, and vibration to resound an intimate encounter between lovers while exploring the conditions that shape language and desire. \n“In Practice: Coco Klockner” is curated by Jovanna Venegas\, Curator and Chris Aque\, Exhibition and Program Manager.
