SUMMARY:Love Your Mother Earth Mushroom Party at Museum of the Moving Image
DESCRIPTION:Join MoMI\, the New York Mycological Society\, and more special guests on Mother’s Day weekend to celebrate Mother Earth and observe the third kingdom of life: fungi. \nThe New York Mycological Society (NYMS)\, a volunteer-run organization founded by experimental composer John Cage in 1962\, will lead a walk around MoMI’s neighborhood exploring the mushrooms\, lichen\, and mycelium in our everyday landscape that we may not have noticed. Everyone with an interest in the living environment\, regardless of their level of knowledge of fungi\, is invited. Space is limited\, RSVP for the mycological walk. \nNext\, visual artist Caro Arévalo will help visitors document their finds with botanical illustrations. All skill levels are welcome\, and drawing supplies will be provided. \nThen\, software engineer and community biologist Sally Kong gives a presentation on fungal microscopy—the beautiful world of mushroom’s interior structures and microscopic elements. RSVP for the microscopy talk. \nMoMI then presents the not-to-be-missed New York City premiere of Fungi: Web of Life featuring noted mycologist Merlin Sheldrake and narrated by Björk. Space is limited\, RSVP for the screening. \nSchedule of activities: \n12:00 p.m.: Meet for the mycological walk in the MoMI Lobby \n12:30–1:30 p.m.: NYMS neighborhood mycological walk from MoMI \n1:30-2:30 p.m.: NYMS ID session \n2:30-3:15 p.m.: Fungi: Web of Life screening \n3:00-4:30 p.m.: Guided mushroom drawing with botanical illustrator Caro Arévalo (drop-in) \n3:30-4:30 p.m.: Fungal Microscopy demo with scientist-artist Sally Kong \nSpecial guests: \nCaro Arévalo is a Peruvian visual artist whose artwork explores the plant and fungi kingdoms\, via the naked eye and microscopes. From her Amazonian heritage\, Caro embraces the interconnectedness of all beings\, the significance of rituals and ancestral wisdom in deepening our connection with nature\, inviting us to cultivate more love towards ourselves and our planet. @caro.arevalo \nVictoria Bayevskiy is a naturalist\, amateur mycologist\, and walk leader at NYMS. Growing up mushroom hunting with her grandmother instilled in her a lifelong love of fungi. With a background in psychology and ecology\, she is passionate about urban green space access and helping more people connect with nature. She is particularly interested in mycorrhizal connections and the ecological relationships fungi foster. \nMaya Han is the Cultural Coordinator for NYMS and the founder of the Myco Film Festival. She has an extensive engagement with NYC’s art\, film\, literary\, music\, and BIPOC communities. As a mycophile\, artist\, filmmaker\, and writer\, she is passionate about excavating hidden histories\, alternative world making\, and community building. \nSally Kong is a software engineer\, artist\, and a community biologist. She has built artist tools and 3D production pipelines for feature animation and games at Blue Sky Studios\, Netflix\, and Rockstar Games. A member of NYMS\, she has led fungal DNA and microscopy workshops. She is currently the lead of the Microbial Reef community project\, exploring the impact of oyster reefs on microbial communities and the biogeochemical cycling in our local waterways. She holds a BSE in Digital Media Design and a MSE in Robotics from the University of Pennsylvania. \nWilton Rao is an engineer\, naturalist\, and walk leader at NYMS. As an amateur mycologist\, he specializes in the diversity of urban lichens. Passionate about urbanism\, ecology\, and their intersection\, he spends his time documenting the wildlife of NYC in every park\, lawn\, and train platform he explores. \nMisha Zitser is a naturalist and walk leader at NYMS. He has spent the last five years observing and documenting the flora\, fauna and fungi of NYC. He is a prolific contributor to several iNaturalist projects\, including “New York City EcoFlora” and “Fungi of NYC”\, a project that was created by NYMS to document the fungal diversity of New York City.

SUMMARY:Wonderful Wizards | Harry Potter Inspired Spring Break Camp
DESCRIPTION:Enter the world of wizards and witches in Snapology's Wizarding program\, inspired by Harry Potter and other amazing wizards. In this program\, your child will be inundated by magical places like Hogwarts\, by creating castles and undergoing a special ceremony where they are sorted and use their own imagination to create secret rooms and a coat of arms! This class will spark their imaginations and encourage creative reasoning in new ways\, allowing them to build amazing things they have only dreamed of before! They’ll enjoy themselves so much\, you might think we have them under a spell! \nVIEW EXPERIENCE TRAILER HERE \n• Building a Stable Structure\nBuilding a sturdy\, reliable structure is a fundamental aspect of engineering. In this program\, students will explore different methods for creating a brick model that is both strong and functional. As they are given new building projects to complete\, they will be positively encouraged to think critically and use teamwork to solve engineering and design problems.\n• Creativity\nSnapology’s Harry Potter program encourages students to embrace their imagination and create familiar items with a unique\, personalized twist. By using visual aids\, holding creative classroom brainstorming sessions\, and providing basic building parameters\, students will be supported as they take creative risks and guided when they aren’t sure what to build next.\n• Presentation Skills & Cooperative Play\nPresenting in front of others can be a stressful and overwhelming experience for young children\, but our program aims to help your child feel more comfortable when presenting in\nfront of a class by having them explain their builds to peers in a safe and supportive way. When they’re not presenting they will be combining their individual builds and working with\nclass to create a larger class creation that requires teamwork\, critical thinking\, and communication. Without communicating\, asking questions\, showing empathy and patience for their peers they will not be able to achieve group builds. \n• Simple Machines: Students will learn about several simple machines throughout the class. Whether learning about pulleys while creating robotic arms\, or wheels and axles as they create their very own pull robots\, students will see simple machines in action. They will also begin to think critically about their surroundings and realize all the simple machines they use every day.\n• Axles\, Gears\, and Motors: Children will learn about the importance of axles\, gears\, and motors in mechanical movement. They will actively experiment with these components to create their robots\, while facilitating a deeper understanding of mechanics.\n• Programming Skills: Each class\, children will be given a program to operate their robotic build. Students are then encouraged to use critical thinking and programming skills to enhance their robot’s\nprogram. Whether making their build respond to motion and tilt sensors\, adding loops\, or creating fun sounds\, children will learn valuable programming skills in an easy to use\, drag and drop programming format. \n : Drop off begins each day at 8:30am. For maximum efficiency\, we ask you to be punctual at arrival and dismissal times. Campers are required to bring in their own lunch\, 1 snack\, and a drink every day. Please pack lunches in paper bags or lunch coolers and put the child’s name on each bag. Snapology Day Camp is a “nut sensitive” environment. As we have several students with food allergies\, no peanut or tree nut products are permitted. \n \, /\, . There is a Teacher to Student ratio of 1 teacher : 7 students with a maximum of 14 students per day.

SUMMARY:Big Feelings
DESCRIPTION:Produced by Little Clouds\, Big Feelings was a recipient of the NYFA Queens Arts Fund for “New Work” and had a sold out run at the Culture Lab in 2024. The show was featured on the NY DAILY NEWS as one of the best 7 things to do in New York. \n\nAlma is a little girl who had to leave the island where she was raised\, listening to ancient myths and the sound of the ocean. Now living in the big city where she can’t \n\nsee the stars\, Alma struggles to cope and feels overwhelmed by “her bad feelings.” One day\, a scientist Muppet named Smoll shows up in the broken television in the \n\nattic. He has a message: He is an expert on feelings and wants to study Alma’s because grown-ups don’t know much about kids’ feelings. In exchange\, he will take \n\nher out of the Big City and show her the universe. \n\n  \n\nCreated with the support of psychologist Christie Stiff\, The Big Feelings experience aims to create an intergenerational bridge and empower elementary school children with the long- term tools they need to spark necessary dialogues about well-being\, mental health\, and feelings. \n\n  \n\nThe show features Lana Boy\, Alice Lussiana Parente\, Heloise Wilson\, Logan Murray and Juliana Suaide.  \n\nCreative Team:\nDirector: Lana Boy\nPlaywright: Heloise Wilson\nExecutive Producers: Little Clouds\, Alice Lussiana Parente\, Heloise Wilson\nStage Manager: Logan Murray\nSet Designer: Lana Boy\nMusic Composer: Axel Cormier Wilson \n\n
