DESCRIPTION:Join SculptureCenter for an art workshop that coincides with its fall group exhibition\, “to ignite our skin.” \n“to ignite our skin” artist Umico Niwa will lead a workshop for youth (8-12) that channels inner “Memory Palaces\,” personal spaces of meaning and identity. Participants are invited to build internal landscapes and place within them a mental sculpture. This symbolic object or Gremlin\, can represent an ideal self\, a grounding force\, a part of oneself to be released\, or a constellation of admired traits. The “Memory Palace” serves as a tool for reflection and an emotional sanctuary. \nParticipants are asked to prepare by bringing organic matter\, such as sticks and twigs\, a wrinkly apple\, a wilting bouquet\, the remains of a bee\, a snail shell\, big potatoes/small potatoes\, or a pitiful acorn to build their sculptures\, which can be taken home or added to Niwa’s installation in the exhibition. \nSpace is limited\, and advance registration is required. Please provide the participant’s name\, age\, and contact information for the day of the event. \nDue to the historic nature of our building\, this location is not fully ADA accessible. The event is located on a second-floor loft\, which is only reachable by stairs. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nUmico Niwa received her MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University\, Richmond\, in 2020. Rejecting Western notions of personhood\, Niwa considers alternative modes of existence\, unbridled by bodily restrictions or gender constructs. Her creations speak to a state of being defined by perpetual movement—a flower wilting\, a fruit ripening\, a somatic memory bank\, a valley full of weeds bursting with life. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION\nOpening Reception: Wed\, Sep 17\, 6-8pm\nExhibition Dates: Sep 18-Dec 22\, 2025 \n“to ignite our skin” features newly commissioned and recent works from an international group of artists whose contributions\, spanning sculpture\, installation\, photography\, and architectural intervention\, explore shedding as a condition of the body today\, locating it as an act of transition\, becoming\, regeneration\, and refusal. Please note that this event is rain or shine. \n4:30 pm – Kids & the Classics Children’s Workshop\nKids & the Classics is the companion piece to Hip to Hip’s program of “Free Shakespeare in the Parks.” This free interactive workshop is offered 30 minutes before every performance\, and is designed for children ages 4 to 12. It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations\, and creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games and close reading of text. \n5:00 pm – The Tempest\nTeeming with fairies\, monsters\, shipwrecks\, and magic\, The Tempest is Shakespeare’s last and most imaginative comedy. After twelve years on a deserted island\, a deposed Duke is now a mighty sorcerer. He raises a storm at sea\, bringing within his grasp the enemies who robbed him of his dukedom. \nAbout Hip to Hip Theatre Company\nHip to Hip Theatre Company was founded in 2007 by Queens-based actors Jason and Joy Marr\, who wanted to share with the community their enthusiasm for great plays\, the works of Shakespeare in particular. DESCRIPTION:What wisdom would you share if you’d lived for 10\,000 years? \nJoin us for a storytelling journey that begins with Urashima Taro\, an ancient Japanese tale from the 8th century about a fisherman who saves a magical turtle — and is taken to a mystical undersea palace to meet a princess who will change his life forever. \nGuided by artist and 2025 Socrates Fellow Natalia Nakazawa\, families will imagine themselves as minogame — mythical sea spirits who’ve witnessed centuries of human experience — and explore: \n✨ Lessons passed down from your ancestors\n✨ How these stories shape who you are today\n✨ Your vision for a sustainable\, resilient future\n✨ The legacies you want to pass on \nAfter sharing stories across generations\, we’ll bring them to life through collagraph printing on mulberry paper — weaving tactile patterns and ancestral memory into prints you can take home. \nNatalia’s work\, rooted in her Latin American and Japanese American heritage\, blends painting\, textiles\, and social practice. Her projects invite collective participation and offer spaces to critically engage with history\, migration\, and identity. \nThis workshop is part of the Socrates Annual Fellowship\, responding to our 2025 theme Up/rooted — a reflection on the delicate balance between relocation and regeneration\, and how uprooting can foster new growth when done with care. \nAbout Natalia Nakazawa\nNatalia Nakazawa (b. 1982\, Charlotte\, NC) is a Queens-based interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work spans painting\, textiles\, and social practice. As a child of Latin American (Uruguayan) and Asian (Japanese American\, Yonsei) diasporas\, she draws on complex cultural legacies to explore identity\, migration\, and storytelling. Through collaborative\, community-driven projects\, Nakazawa blurs the boundaries between education\, activism\, and art\, inviting collective participation. Her jacquard textiles incorporate images from open-access museum collections\, often highlighting historical moments of cultural exchange. These works serve as tactile archives; places to critically engage with memory. \nAbout the Fellowship\nThe Socrates Annual Fellowship and exhibition reflects Socrates’ founding commitment to artistic experimentation and excellence\, while also nurturing artists’ careers. Artists are selected through an open call and receive financial support\, access to Socrates’ outdoor studios and technical support\, and inclusion in a Park-wide exhibition. Since 2001\, 279 artists have participated with many subsequently receiving further commissions for public art projects. The Socrates Annual Fellowship & Exhibition is one of the Park’s longest running programs and is an important training ground for early career artists to gain experience creating art in the public realm. \nThis year’s Fellowship will respond to the theme “Up/rooted\,” which explores the complexities of uprooting species for long-term sustainability and resilience. The term “uprooted” evokes the tension between dislocation and resilience. “Up” signifies the act of lifting away\, while “root” refers to the hidden systems below the ground—anchoring life and absorbing essential nutrients. This duality invites us to reflect on the implications of relocation and adaptation\, exploring how when done thoughtfully it can foster new growth and understanding. In what ways can we foster regeneration while acknowledging and mitigating the losses within our ecological and social landscapes? How might we navigate the delicate balance between ecological preservation and community needs to create a more resilient future?
