SUMMARY:Juliana May - Optimistic Voices (reprise)
DESCRIPTION:Performances will take place at The Chocolate Factory Theater\, 38-33 24th Street\, Long Island City. \nAcclaimed choreographer Juliana F. May is renowned for creating thrillingly elaborate cycles of song\, text\, and movement from the wreckage of difficult experience. Influenced by postmodern dance and musical theater\, she uses repetition and off-kilter rhythms in pursuit of a new performative language. For Optimistic Voices—performed by Justin Faircloth\, Wendell Gray II\, Lucy Kaminsky\, Gwendolyn Knapp\, Kayvon Pourazar\, and Anh Vo—May creates a dreamlike landscape from the quagmire of everyday life. \nChoreographed\, written and directed by Juliana F. SUMMARY:Autumn Knight - NOTHING: more
DESCRIPTION:Performances will take place at The Chocolate Factory Theater\, 38-33 24th Street\, Long Island City. \nCo-Presented with Under The Radar Festival. \nNOTHING: more is an anti-still life\, a composition of objects and bodies constantly in flux. In this performance artist Autumn Knight experiments with the porous boundary between parts and whole\, object and body\, configuration and abstraction. Throughout its duration\, three performers move objects of varying size and texture into momentary compositions; while one performer constructs an image\, another comes to disrupt\, reinterpret and at times conglomerate with their body and/or more objects. The performance itself resists identification\, narration and legibility\, instead Knight starts from nothing and never veers too far from it. This is a process of making the self\, a constant state of renewal that takes our parts to create and reconfigure out of necessity. And there is always more; more to be done\, rehearsed and assumed\, creating both more and nothing at the same time. \nCreator: Autumn Knight. Made in Collaboration With: Kaylah Farrish\, Dominica Greene\, Jasmine Hearn. Producer: nick von kleist. Lighting Design: Tuce Yasak. Object Design: Matt Shalzi.

SUMMARY:Take Root: Miho Ryu | Nicole Kadar-Greene/NK&D/a movement company
DESCRIPTION:Take Root: Miho Ryu | Nicole Kadar-Greene/NK&D/a movement company \nJanuary 23rd & 24th at 8:00 PM \nGreen Space\n37-24 24th Street Suite 211\nLong Island City\, NY 11101\n$22 in advance\n$25 cash or $27 card at the door \nMiho Ryu | Lighthouse\nLighthouse is a delicate yet powerful piece where intricate choreography and raw improvisation interweave and resonate from the living bodies of dancers. Inspired by the symbol of a lighthouse—illuminating vast oceans and guiding vessels to safety—this work contemplates the light that dancers can offer to the world and seeks to approach the deeper truth of what it means to live. Originally from Tokyo\, Miho Ryu has been based in New York since 2024\, and is active as a dancer\, choreographer\, and teaching artist. \nNicole Kadar-Greene/NK&D/a movement company | between the balance\nbetween the balance discusses the fragile equilibrium of the human self in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The story is told through rhetorical and sometimes literal dialogue between dancers\, composer (William Catanzaro)\, and audience communicating opposing ideas of balance/instability\, weakness/strength\, and wellness/illness. As the piece develops the dancers offer moments of hope and strength despite shifting imbalance/equilibrium within the world and in one’s self. The original work (October 2021 premiere\, 55 minutes in length) was created for two audiences – a virtual\, zoom audience and a live\, in-person audience and utilized the same technological ideas seen in this version.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception | "Pat Oleszko: Fool Disclosure" and "In Practice: Ana Gzirishvili"
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thu\, Jan 29\, 6-8pm for an opening reception celebrating “Pat Oleszko: Fool Disclosure” and “In Practice: Ana Gzirishvili.” \n_______ \nPat Oleszko: Fool Disclosure\nOn view Jan 29–Apr 27\, 2026 \nSculptureCenter presents the first solo exhibition in a New York City institution in over 35 years of Pat Oleszko. Rooted in humor\, sharp social commentary\, and defiance of all forms of authority\, Oleszko’s practice has often taken the form of sculptures which lend themselves to raucous performances that use linguistic wit to address various concerns\, including accessible housing\, women’s issues\, and world politics. As her work developed from the 1970s on\, Oleszko devised two strategies: using her body\, which led to costumes\, and using air\, which produced large inflatable works. In both cases\, her art “walked out the door\,” in her words\, and she began “using all the world as a stooge.” For performances and events\, Oleszko continues to create a universe of characters\, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to worldbuilding and to “wearing her work\,” from dressing up as different characters for a waitressing job in her early days in New York to presenting at the Winter Olympics and appearing in movies\, festivals\, and theaters worldwide. \nSpanning both floors of SculptureCenter\, this survey exhibition is constructed around Oleszko’s singular inflatables\, which first appeared in the 1980s\, and brings together dozens of these airy\, monumental works for the first time. From “Yupasaurus” (1980)\, a dinosaur that satirizes developers aggressively buying up land in New York\, to “Quit Draggin’” (2012)\, a towering dragon that bemoans a slow response to the climate crisis\, they offer a rare glimpse into this vital aspect of her work. The exhibition also includes other key works from her decades-long career\, such as costumes\, sculptural chapeaux\, films\, performance documentation\, and archival material from the 1970s to the present.\n_______ \nIn Practice: Ana Gzirishvili\nOn view Jan 29–Apr 27\, 2026 \nAna Gzirishvili’s practice spans poetry\, film\, sculpture\, and installation\, exploring the liminal spaces between beings\, objects\, and material and immaterial realms. Her works engage with themes of transitionality\, circulation\, and displacement\, often through disassembling and reassembling contexts and forms. For In Practice\, she will create a new group of leather sculptures sourced from aged furniture\, reshaped into still life arrangements inspired by various architectural contexts that explore the scars and traces left by objects and spaces.

SUMMARY:The Stories Behind Their Names: Queens Women in Action at Culture Lab LIC
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, February 5\, 6 – 9pm \nOn view: February 6 – March 29 during gallery hours: Thursday & Friday\, 5-9pm\, and Saturday & Sunday\, 2-9pm \nFree Admission. Donations Welcome \nThe Stories Behind Their Names: Queens Women in Action is a community-centered public history exhibition honoring women whose names are woven into our public landscape and whose stories are integral to the making of Queens. Presented during Women’s History Month by the Queens Memory Project in partnership with Urban Archive\, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how history lives in our neighborhoods – on the streets\, schools\, parks\, and buildings we pass every day\, often without knowing the stories they hold. \nDrawing from the Queens Name Explorer project\, this exhibition honors the democratic power of participatory archiving by including photographs shared by families\, oral histories recorded with neighbors\, and records shared across generations. These materials reflect a collaborative approach to history-making\, where community members are not just subjects of history\, but active stewards of it. \nFrom Long Island City to Jamaica to the northeastern corner of Queens\, the exhibition highlights a diverse group of women whose contributions reshaped neighborhoods and paved the way for a more sustainable future. The women featured here are educators\, activists\, journalists\, public servants\, artists\, and community advocates\, many of them breaking barriers in race\, gender\, class\, and language to create systems of change central to thriving communities. \nThese women’s names mark more than the places they occupy. They tell stories of collective action and sustained efforts\, stories that continue to resonate today. By uncovering the stories behind their names\, we invite visitors to consider how public memory is constructed\, and whose contributions are celebrated. \nCurated by the Queens Memory Project team: Meral Agish\, Dacia Metes\, Aimai Reporter\, and J. Faye Yuan. \nThank you to Queens Public Library’s Archives and Marketing & Communications Department and John Paul Chirdon. \nhttps://www.culturelablic.org/#queens-women-in-action

SUMMARY:Modern Ink: Crossing Media\, Blending Cultures at Culture Lab LIC
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, February 5\, 6 – 9pm\nOn view February 6 – March 29 during gallery hours:\nThursday & Friday\, 5-9pm\, and Saturday & Sunday\, 2-9pm \nVisual art has been an essential component of human civilization for more than 3\,500 years. From the earliest ancient Greek palace murals to contemporary artistic practices\, art like language\, music\, and theater has evolved through ongoing cultural exchange. Art reflects human thought and artworks shape society; when these forces converge\, they generate profound creative energy. \nInk is the soul of Chinese art. In celebration of the 2026 Chinese New Year\, Culture Lab LIC presents Modern Ink: Crossing Media\, Blending Cultures\, a group exhibition of contemporary Chinese artists. The five participating artists each possess a distinctive style and unique artistic language. Through their works\, audiences can hear a voice that traverses Eastern and Western artistic media\, integrates the essence of both cultures\, and resonates with the pulse of contemporary society; they can also see conceptual expressions that range from the concentrated spirit of Chinese calligraphy and expressions to the Wall Street Series\, which is deeply connected to the realities of modern life. \nDrawing on years of artistic practice\, the artists reveal both their personal creative pursuits and broader cultural concerns. These works invite viewers into a multilayered aesthetic experience while encouraging reflection on classical and contemporary art\, Eastern and Western traditions\, and the human condition of our time. \nArtists:\nLi Geng\nWang Houtang\nGan Yu\nQin Feng\nBian Hong \nCurator: Ethan Cohen\nAssistant Curators: Chere Hong and Jessica Yang\nAcademic Host: Tess Howsam and Gan Yu\nFull support from Culture Lab LIC\, New York \nGenerous sponsorship from Kung-Fu Ink\, Inc.\, New York \nFree Admission. SUMMARY:The NEW Jack Cole Dancers' CLUB ACT
DESCRIPTION:The NEW Jack Cole Dancers’ CLUB ACT offers an alluring evening of Jazz dance and music unlike anything you’ve seen before. Originally presented at The Midnight Theater in 2024\, the act reinvigorates the age of romping table-side entertainment\, immersing its audience in a scintillating mid-century Jazz club with a titillating look at the legacy of dance pioneer Jack Cole. This new\, expanded version of the show features thrilling Jazz and Theater Dance pieces choreographed in the essence of Cole’s Broadway\, Film\, and Nightclub work\, performed by dynamite dancers trained in Cole’s exhilarating style. \nFrom the mid-1930s through to the ‘60s\, Jack Cole dazzled New York\, Chicago\, and LA nightclubs with his unique fusion of world dance styles and Jazz music. Cole’s provocative style paved the way for much of the popular Jazz and Theater dance today\, including the work of American dance legends Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins. Now in the 21st Century\, choreographer Cam Loeser brings Cole’s spirit back to Manhattan’s nightlife. Join us on February 7th at LPAC’s Little Theater for a developmental presentation of this innovative new concept!

SUMMARY:Viñedos: A True Story from Monarcas
DESCRIPTION:Blending folkloric tradition with contemporary storytelling\, Viñedos: A True Story from Monarcas honors the journey of immigrant laborers who became vineyard owners and proud producers of California wine. With Calpulli’s signature combination of vibrant garments and energetic dance\, the work brings a timely light to stories of perseverance\, transformation\, and cultural pride. “Calpulli will always honor immigrants\,” says Founding Executive Director\, Juan Castaño. “We need not look further than our parents\, our community\, and ourselves to recognize the daily contributions immigrants make to this country. There are an endless number of true stories to be shared\, seldom heard\, and that could change the way we think about immigration.”
