Her projects invite collective participation and offer spaces to critically engage with history\, migration\, and identity. \nThis workshop is part of the Socrates Annual Fellowship\, responding to our 2025 theme Up/rooted — a reflection on the delicate balance between relocation and regeneration\, and how uprooting can foster new growth when done with care. \nAbout Natalia Nakazawa\nNatalia Nakazawa (b. 1982\, Charlotte\, NC) is a Queens-based interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work spans painting\, textiles\, and social practice. As a child of Latin American (Uruguayan) and Asian (Japanese American\, Yonsei) diasporas\, she draws on complex cultural legacies to explore identity\, migration\, and storytelling. Through collaborative\, community-driven projects\, Nakazawa blurs the boundaries between education\, activism\, and art\, inviting collective participation. Her jacquard textiles incorporate images from open-access museum collections\, often highlighting historical moments of cultural exchange. These works serve as tactile archives; places to critically engage with memory. \nAbout the Fellowship\nThe Socrates Annual Fellowship and exhibition reflects Socrates’ founding commitment to artistic experimentation and excellence\, while also nurturing artists’ careers. Artists are selected through an open call and receive financial support\, access to Socrates’ outdoor studios and technical support\, and inclusion in a Park-wide exhibition. Since 2001\, 279 artists have participated with many subsequently receiving further commissions for public art projects. The Socrates Annual Fellowship & Exhibition is one of the Park’s longest running programs and is an important training ground for early career artists to gain experience creating art in the public realm. \nThis year’s Fellowship will respond to the theme “Up/rooted\,” which explores the complexities of uprooting species for long-term sustainability and resilience. The term “uprooted” evokes the tension between dislocation and resilience. “Up” signifies the act of lifting away\, while “root” refers to the hidden systems below the ground—anchoring life and absorbing essential nutrients. This duality invites us to reflect on the implications of relocation and adaptation\, exploring how when done thoughtfully it can foster new growth and understanding. In what ways can we foster regeneration while acknowledging and mitigating the losses within our ecological and social landscapes? How might we navigate the delicate balance between ecological preservation and community needs to create a more resilient future?

It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations\, and creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games and close reading of text. \n5:00 pm – The Tempest\nTeeming with fairies\, monsters\, shipwrecks\, and magic\, The Tempest is Shakespeare’s last and most imaginative comedy. After twelve years on a deserted island\, a deposed Duke is now a mighty sorcerer. He raises a storm at sea\, bringing within his grasp the enemies who robbed him of his dukedom. \nAbout Hip to Hip Theatre Company\nHip to Hip Theatre Company was founded in 2007 by Queens-based actors Jason and Joy Marr\, who wanted to share with the community their enthusiasm for great plays\, the works of Shakespeare in particular. DESCRIPTION:Beginner workshops are perfect for you to grab your friends\, grab a drink and come make tiny trees! We’re bringing the awesome art of bonsai out of the hedged in gardens and into the streets! Or at least into your favorite bars/breweries/pubs. Bonsai Bar is a night of fun you don’t want to miss. Learn the fundamental skills and techniques behind the art of bonsai while enjoying a night out with friends! Our teachers will introduce core concepts and guide your experience as you pot\, prune\, and design your very own bonsai tree! Our Guarantee: These tiny trees are so hardy we guarantee you can keep yours alive\, or we’ll replace it. \nThis workshop will be hosted at Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. Many Czechs and Slovaks in the 1800s left Austria-Hungary\, settling in Astoria\, Queens. In 1892\, they formed the Bohemian Citizens’ Benevolent Society to honor the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Funds were raised and in 1910 two lots were purchased for a haven to maintain traditions of the homeland. On Oct. 1\, 1910\, Bohemian Hall’s cornerstone was laid. Three parts were built: an entrance\, Sokol Gym (Main Hall)\, and outside Bar/Park.
