DESCRIPTION:Join SculptureCenter for a reception on Thu\, Oct 2\, 5-8pm to celebrate the exhibition opening of “In Practice: Nadim Choufi.” \n“In Practice: Nadim Choufi”\nOn View Oct 2 – 11\, 2025 \nNadim Choufi’s work explores how ideals of progress manifest and seduce\, and the price of such visions on the lives subjected to their realization. Through sculpture\, film\, and text\, Choufi draws on visual and literary practices that oppose or complicate narratives of national and global progress. For Choufi’s project at SculptureCenter\, he has produced a new publication\, In the Face of the Dragon\, in which he composed a cento poem from lines borrowed from Arab poets who transform themselves\, their lovers\, and their people into animals and natural elements\, speaking through these tongues of love and resistance. \nA performance by Elsa Saade will take place throughout the evening. \nElsa Saade is a Lebanese musician\, singer/song-writer\, puppeteer and doula based in New York City. Her art practice is driven by the political want for her voice to serve as an intimate companion of metaphorical as well as literal birth and death through performance and storytelling.

The play infuses the stage with live music and Latin flavor\, offering a story that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant. \nAs part of LPAC’s mission to nurture emerging artists\, Latin Lover entered a collaborative development process designed to give creators a safe platform for experimentation\, feedback\, and growth. LPAC also paired the playwright with a dedicated mentor\, creating an ongoing space to exchange ideas\, refine scenes\, and explore new directions between formal development milestones. \nThe next chapter of this journey arrives in October 2025\, when Latin Lover returns to LPAC with Work in Progress Showing(s) that is shaped by months of feedback\, mentorship\, and creative collaboration. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a deep dive into the microorganisms that make life delicious—in our drinks\, bread\, yogurt\, pickles\, and more. First\, watch The Birth of Saké (2015) to whet your appetite and expand your understanding of the process of fermentation. Then\, in the Tasting Lab\, local purveyors of fermented products will be offering samples\, including Queens’ own Mama O’s Premium Kimchi and Bench Flour Bakers\, plus Tart Vinegar and Brooklyn Kura sake. Special opportunity to taste Tedorigawa sake from Japan\, too – the brewery featured in The Birth of Sake. Then\, learn how it’s made so deliciously at the Live Cultures conversation. Flavor scientist Arielle Johnson\, author of Flavorama: A Guide to Unlocking the Art and Science of Flavor\, shares some of her current explorations of the molecular and physical experience of flavor as it intersects with aesthetic and cultural matters. She’ll be joined by chemist turned craft sake brewer\, Brandon Doughan\, co-founder and master brewer of Brooklyn Kura\, New York’s first sake brewery. Live Cultures will consist of an afternoon of film\, talks\, and gatherings around fermented foods and drink; the final program in the Open Worlds: Science series\, supported by the Simons Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Join SculptureCenter for an art workshop that coincides with its fall group exhibition\, “to ignite our skin.” \n“to ignite our skin” artist Umico Niwa will lead a workshop for youth (8-12) that channels inner “Memory Palaces\,” personal spaces of meaning and identity. Participants are invited to build internal landscapes and place within them a mental sculpture. This symbolic object or Gremlin\, can represent an ideal self\, a grounding force\, a part of oneself to be released\, or a constellation of admired traits. The “Memory Palace” serves as a tool for reflection and an emotional sanctuary. \nParticipants are asked to prepare by bringing organic matter\, such as sticks and twigs\, a wrinkly apple\, a wilting bouquet\, the remains of a bee\, a snail shell\, big potatoes/small potatoes\, or a pitiful acorn to build their sculptures\, which can be taken home or added to Niwa’s installation in the exhibition. \nSpace is limited\, and advance registration is required. Please provide the participant’s name\, age\, and contact information for the day of the event. \nDue to the historic nature of our building\, this location is not fully ADA accessible. The event is located on a second-floor loft\, which is only reachable by stairs. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nUmico Niwa received her MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University\, Richmond\, in 2020. Rejecting Western notions of personhood\, Niwa considers alternative modes of existence\, unbridled by bodily restrictions or gender constructs. Before a joke appears on a televised special or on an album\, it lives a fascinating life of twists and turns. The rules are simple: Laugh if it’s funny… And maybe politely fake laugh a little if it’s not because hey\, trying new things is hard! This show is a favorite of Time Out New York and you just can’t bottle the infectious energy that erupts every single show! This is a guaranteed good time for a solo outing\, date night or group hang. We of course also highly recommended this show to all our beloved Astoria comedy nerds. This is where the magic happens!

DESCRIPTION:Join LIC Feral Feeders for some fall cat shelter building! \nLIC Feral Feeders is back to host their fall cat shelter-building event at the Materials for the Arts warehouse later this month on Thursday\, October 23rd from 6:00 — 8:30pm 🤩 \nJust like last year\, this free event is open to individuals of any and all experience levels! We encourage you to join us whether you are a total newbie to shelter-building or a well-seasoned pro. \nAttendees will work alongside LIC Feral Feeders team members to build cat shelters in groups. If any participants have colony cats in need of a shelter\, they are welcome to take their newly built shelter home.
