Dr. Kelley’s talk is titled\, “From the Waterfront to the Sea: Working Class Democracy and the Question of Palestine.”   \nDr. Kelley is a Distinguished Professor and the Gary B. Upon Dr. Fitch’s unexpecting passing in 2011 at age 72\, several friends and colleagues wrote tributes to him in The Nation\, Jacobin\, and Dissent Magazine. The series is made possible by the generosity of Jane LaTour\, who died last year.  \n“Bob was an inspirational and versatile teacher who taught many different courses in two disciplines: sociology and political science. He was also a prolific writer and a tireless activist\,” Karen Miller\, Ph.D.\, professor of history at LaGuardia Community College\, and chair of the lecture planning committee.  \nDr. Fitch received his Ph.D. in sociology from SUNY Binghamton\, his M.A. in Economic History from University of California\, Berkeley\, and his B.A. in history from the University of Illinois. A union activist since his teens\, he wrote numerous articles about the labor movement\, political corruption\, political economy\, welfare and poverty\, race\, and affirmative action\, for publications including The Los Angeles Times\, The New York Times\, Village Voice\, The Nation\, Washington Post\, Newsday\, City Limits\, and Gotham Gazette. He was an occasional guest and commentator on TV and radio programs. Dr. Fitch published four books\, including Ghana: End of An Illusion (1968)\, The Assassination of New York (1993)\, and Solidarity for Sale: How Corruption Destroyed the Labor Movement and Undermined America's Promise (2006).  \nAt the 13th Annual Robert Fitch Memorial Lecture\, Dr. Kelley will be introduced by Doug Henwood\, a journalist and economic analyst who has introduced every speaker in the series since delivering its first lecture in 2012. Mr. Henwood hosts the weekly radio show Behind the News and has authored several books including My Turn: Hillary Clinton Targets the Presidency; Wall Street; The State of the USA Atlas; After the New Economy; and My Turn. From 1986–2013 he published Left Business Observer\, a newsletter on economics and politics.  \nPrevious speakers at the Annual Robert Fitch Memorial Lecture:  \n2023: Cindi Katz  \n2022: Kim Phillips-Fein  \n2021: Suketu Mehta  \n2019: Tarry Hum  \n2019: Richard Walker  \n2018: Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor  \n2017: Peter Marcuse  \n2016: Peter Kwong  \n2015: Sharon Zukin  \n2014: Dr. Ruth Wilson Gilmore  \n2013: John Halle  \n2012: Doug Henwood  \n• • • •  \nLaGuardia Community College (LAGCC)\, a Hispanic-Serving Institution\, located in Long Island City\, Queens offers more than 50 degrees and certificates\, and more than 65 continuing education programs to educate New Yorkers seeking new skills and careers. SUMMARY:Keenan Steiner: Sneaky (A Standup Hour)
DESCRIPTION:Keenan Steiner: Sneaky (A Standup Hour) \n  \nSome gays are born pole dancing around an umbilical cord sliding down a rainbow\, while NYC standup comedian Keenan Steiner badly did not want to come out even into his mid-20s\, let alone admit his sexuality to himself. \n  \nIn his inaugural standup hour/one-man show\, Keenan\, in his authentic voice and off-the-cuff style\, leads you through the episodes that slowed him down and then convinced him to belatedly accept his sexuality\, one twisted punchline at a time. The show is being called the “Funniest thing I’ve seen in years\,” “methodically crafted” and “crack up funny” by audiences in the US and Mexico.  \n  \n“With a style that’s big and bold without ever losing an ounce of sincerity\, Keenan guides you on an adventure that’s often outrageous\, sometimes poignant and always\, always funny.” See more reviews here: keenansteiner.com/reviews. \n  \nSNEAKY\, got its start at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and much like Keenan’s humor\, it took an unexpected turn to Mexico\, where it played in cities across the country. It picked up some flavor and stories from across the border and has now been playing across venues throughout  New York City. Featuring the very funny Ruth Allen (The Stand) \n  \nPreview Keenan’s standup (and watch the mini doc "Stand Arriba" at youtube.com/@KeenanSteiner \nInstagram @KeenanStandup \nTiktok @gringobilingay

SUMMARY:Small World Cinema Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Samia Halaby\, her longtime musical collaborator Kevin Nathaniel\, and Taipei Biennial 2023 co-curator Brian Kuan Wood for an evening of music and conversation in SculptureCenter’s lower level to close Small World Cinema. \nSince beginning her career in the late 1950s\, Samia Halaby has created a personal vocabulary of abstraction based in painting that spread quickly to experiments with technology. After leaving her teaching position at the Yale School of Art in the 1980s\, Halaby began advancing her painterly interest in geometry and the science of visual perception by experimenting with digital technology. She has described how the discovery of the computer as a medium\, when she was an artist in her fifties\, brought delight in the beauty of programming. She learned software languages and developed short programs that allowed her to create digital paintings that the Amiga 1000 performed on command. Later\, during the 1990s\, she programmed a PC\, creating an application for her own use that converted the keyboard into an “abstract painting piano” with which she produced kinetic paintings from extensive sets of functions and color palettes. First using the program for small and informal performances with musicians\, including Nathaniel\, Halaby has since become known as a pioneer of computer-based kinetic art.  \nThis event will include a screening of a performance with Julian Abraham “Togar” that Halaby presented as part of the opening program of the Taipei Biennial 2023\, followed by a conversation with Kevin Nathaniel and Brian Kuan Wood. \nA selection of Halaby’s kinetic painting video works appears in SculptureCenter's lower level as part of Small World Cinema\, a presentation of moving image works from the Taipei Biennial 2023 – Small World\, exhibited in New York in collaboration with Taipei Fine Arts Museum. \nSmall World Cinema\nOn view through Mar 25\, 2024

But that's just the beginning! Using the cutting-edge Cubelets Robotic technology\, campers will craft a variety of holiday-themed animals\, from chirping chicks to robotic rabbits. This unique building experience not only fosters creativity but also introduces campers to basic robotics and engineering concepts in an engaging and intuitive way. As they build\, students will dive into the fascinating world of animal habits\, learning about the creatures they're creating in a fun and interactive setting. Our curriculum is designed to sneak in educational content\, ensuring that campers learn valuable STEM skills without even realizing it. The fun doesn't stop at building and coding. The camp will be packed with a series of holiday-themed games and activities\, from Easter egg hunts to robotics challenges\, ensuring that the spirit of the holiday is celebrated in every aspect of the camp. At Snapology\, we believe in making education fun and accessible. Our Easter Robotics Adventure Camp is the perfect place for kids to explore their interests in technology and engineering\, all while celebrating one of the most joyful holidays of the year. Don't miss out on this egg-citing opportunity to make this Easter weekend unforgettable

SUMMARY:Take Root Presents
DESCRIPTION:Advance sale tickets: $20 onlineTickets purchased at door: $25 cash or card \nAbout the Works: \nDavid Appel\nA new collaborative project with four other dancers\, one that dives into and illuminates parallels to how we can more fully and fruitfully co-exist with others\, and how an individual’s chosen pursuits can better meet\, interact\, and mesh with the diverse character of a group. Through an ongoing commitment to orchestrating evolving blends of improvised and set material\, he challenges the participating movers to meet the moment: calling upon and honoring each person’s honed and special skills to articulate ever more clearly and vibrantly\, while they encounter and tread paths through a combination of remembered signposts and unexpected change\, as we do in life itself. The piece will serve as another response to questions around how we can enliven a performance practice that intriguingly models ways of engaging ourselves\, each other\, and the world through which we move. The dancers’ individual and collective presence will also be seasoned by alternative approaches to situating their moving vis-à-vis the audience\, and shaded strategically by segments of various recorded music and spoken word. \nMar Undag & Elliott Keller\nContemporary dance that explores the interplay between movement\, music\, and cinematography. The dancers\, cinematographer\, and music will work collaboratively to create a seamless and immersive experience for the audience. The first section explores the chaotic and conflicting emotions that arises internally. The second movement explores the theme of connection and empathy. The final part explores the theme of reflection and resolution. The projections will include both pre-filmed and real-time footage of the movements\, displayed on a screen or surface.
