Many Czechs and Slovaks in the 1800s left Austria-Hungary\, settling in Astoria\, Queens. In 1892\, they formed the Bohemian Citizens’ Benevolent Society to honor the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Funds were raised and in 1910 two lots were purchased for a haven to maintain traditions of the homeland. On Oct. 1\, 1910\, Bohemian Hall’s cornerstone was laid. Three parts were built: an entrance\, Sokol Gym (Main Hall)\, and outside Bar/Park.
