SUMMARY:Pass the Crown: Voices & Memory at Culture Lab LIC
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: June 5\, 6-9pm. Beer\, wine\, food and live music. Free Admission. \nOn view June 5 – July 27 during gallery hours\, Thursday & Friday\, 5-9pm\, and Saturday & Sunday\, 2-9pm. \nPass the Crown: Voices & Memory is an interactive media installation exploring dementia\, memory\, and legacy within communities of color. Expanding on the Pass the Crown photo portrait series\, the project was inspired by the artist Pri’s late grandmother\, who had dementia and wore a crown in the final photo portrait taken of her by the artist. That crown became a symbol of resilience\, memory\, and dignity. That very same crown is now passed from model to model within the Pass the Crown photo series\, with each model impacted by dementia\, representing the continuation of their stories. Drawing from over a decade of experience as a dementia caregiver of both her grandmother and aunt\, the artist creates an interactive experience that invites audiences to engage with personal histories. \nThe installation features five large-scale editorial portraits\, each framed with symbolic materials reflecting the subject’s life. An interactive timeline highlights key moments\, while Augmented Reality (AR) allows visitors to unlock deeper layers of each story through images\, audio\, and personal artifacts. Pass the Crown: Voices & Memory honors the strength\, wisdom\, and love that endure beyond memory loss\, preserving the legacies of those affected and inspiring conversations about care\, connection\, and the power of storytelling. \nhttps://www.culturelablic.org/#pass-the-crown

SUMMARY:Creature Feature: The Science of Monster Movies & Community Filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the real biology behind the weird and wonderful creatures of monster movies! A paleontologist will contrast the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park to their feathered\, paleontologically accurate—and much scarier—real-life counterparts. An entomologist will describe how the Alien  Xenomorph’s famous chest-burster owes significant debt to the real-world horrors of the parasitoid wasp larvae’s emergence from a caterpillar. Slugs\, sharks\, and other creatures will also be discussed in this can’t-miss program for fans of biology and monster movies.

SUMMARY:Bonsai Workshop at Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden
DESCRIPTION:Beginner workshops are perfect for you to grab your friends\, grab a drink and come make tiny trees! We’re bringing the awesome art of bonsai out of the hedged in gardens and into the streets! Or at least into your favorite bars/breweries/pubs. Bonsai Bar is a night of fun you don’t want to miss. Learn the fundamental skills and techniques behind the art of bonsai while enjoying a night out with friends! Our teachers will introduce core concepts and guide your experience as you pot\, prune\, and design your very own bonsai tree! Our Guarantee: These tiny trees are so hardy we guarantee you can keep yours alive\, or we’ll replace it. \nThis workshop will be hosted at Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. Many Czechs and Slovaks in the 1800s left Austria-Hungary\, settling in Astoria\, Queens. In 1892\, they formed the Bohemian Citizens’ Benevolent Society to honor the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Funds were raised and in 1910 two lots were purchased for a haven to maintain traditions of the homeland. On Oct. 1\, 1910\, Bohemian Hall's cornerstone was laid. Three parts were built: an entrance\, Sokol Gym (Main Hall)\, and outside Bar/Park. At one time\, over 800 beer gardens were still in NYC\, and Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden remains today to keep the proud tradition alive into the new millennium! \nUnder 21 policy: Please contact Rhode Island Spirits for details regarding underage entry \nFor more about Bonsai Bar and what to expect at our classes\, visit our website at: https://bonsaibar.com/products/bohemian-hall-beer-garden

SUMMARY:SculptureCenter Book Launch with Artist Rafael Domenech
DESCRIPTION:“Rafael Domenech: Flowers Blooming on Acid” is the first comprehensive monograph of Rafael Domenech’s work. Join Domenech and SculptureCenter curator Jovanna Venegas for a conversation around several of his recent projects featured in the book\, including his 2020 SculptureCenter exhibition “Model to exhaust this place (SculptureCenter Pavilion).” \nDesigned by the artist and published by Isométrico Publications and 193 Gallery\, this volume was released in conjunction with Domenech’s first solo exhibition in Paris\, curated by Jérôme Sans at 193 Gallery. The publication includes an essay by Sans\, a conversation between him and Domenech\, as well as a series of projects that trace the artist’s journey across time and geographies. \nCopies of “Rafael Domenech: Flowers Blooming on Acid” will be available for sale during the event. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nRafael Domenech (b. 1989\, Havana\, Cuba) is a visual artist working within site-specific installations\, including pavilions\, artist books\, texts\, public programs\, and sculptures. His work is deeply rooted in notions of architecture/publishing and their ability to shape and inform our lived experiences. Through his works\, from immersive installations to experimental publications and artist books\, Domenech explores the overlapping frictions between art\, design\, the built environments\, and the community it inhabits. \nRecent exhibitions include the 58th Carnegie International\, Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh; The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University\, Richmond; Passerelle Centre d’Art Contemporain\, Brest\, France; and the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD)\, Miami. \nFor more information\, please visit: https://www.sculpture-center.org/events/14469/rafael-domenech-book-launch

SUMMARY:Opening Reception | Spasial Program by Khajistan and In Practice: Kevin Hernández Rosa
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free opening reception celebrating Spasial Program by Khajistan and In Practice: Kevin Hernández Rosa. \nSpasial Program by Khajistan\nOn view Jun 19–Jul 28\, 2025 \nBorn in 9th-century Herat\, Afghanistan\, today Khajistan lives on as an archive founded by Saad Khan. Khajistan saves\, digitizes\, and distributes art\, words\, and media from forgotten or silenced communities\, stretching from the Indus to the Maghreb. Their work addresses gaps or losses of diverse local cultural expression within mainstream “global” media settings while considering how changing Western technologies (and a lopsided internet) risk intensifying the cultural disappearance of marginalized communities. \nIn 2025\, Khajistan’s growing digital archive has over 85\,000 community-contributed photos and videos\, while Toshakhana\, Khajistan’s physical archive\, contains the world’s largest collection of Pakistani film memorabilia\, rare gems like Islamicate Judaica\, censored and discontinued Urdu\, Farsi\, and Arabic magazines\, and American and local war propaganda. \nAt SculptureCenter\, Khajistan presents a #spasialprogram\, opening its vault of banned\, censored\, and overlooked audiovisual and print media\, alongside a weekend bazaar. \nIn Practice: Kevin Hernández Rosa\nOn view Jun 19–Jul 28\, 2025 \nKevin Hernández Rosa often makes sculpture that alludes to the body in discomfort\, whether in the course of normal regulation\, in response to harsh environments\, or under direct assault. His materials for his forthcoming In Practice exhibition include modified found objects alongside carved\, welded\, and assembled forms. Hernández Rosa will exhibit new works linking a wooden revolver prototype whittled by Samuel Colt circa 1830 – a impotent but sinister folk object of sorts\, now in a special firearms collection in Connecticut – to conditions of violence today.
