SUMMARY:An evening with CFGNY\, Kerstin Brätsch\, and Contemporary Art Library
DESCRIPTION:SculptureCenter hosts a special evening with Contemporary Art Library to celebrate the release of Kerstin Brätsch’s Contemporary Art Quarterly archive\, with an activation by CFGNY and a performance by VIOLENCE. Drinks will be served by KAYA. The Contemporary Art Quarterly archive offers an exhaustive documentation history of Brätsch's work as well as the work of the various collectives in which she has been a core member. \nKerstin Brätsch’s artistic practice centers the idea of painting\, oscillating between a conceptual analysis of the medium and a devotion to painterly processes. Her interest in the power of the unseen world\, manifest in an interrogation of the occult\, is expressed through painting\, performance\, and collaboration. Brätsch uses painting to question the ways in which the body can be expressed psychologically\, physically\, and socially. Through this focus on the medium—via myriad aesthetic and conceptual approaches—she is seeking to destabilize and expand upon the very definition of painting. A central subject for her is the relationship between painting and subjectivity\, a connection that is softened\, subverted\, and sometimes parodied in her work. This becomes particularly evident in her engagement with the metaphysical strands of abstraction and the animistic qualities of painting. To question the agency of painting and engage with it as an expanded field\, she invites artisanal practices (including stained glass\, paper marbling\, and stucco marmo) and sustained collaborations into the equation\, moving from the personal to the collective in order to question the medium’s largely uncontested history. Brätsch was part of the group exhibition Leopords in the Temple at SculptureCenter in 2010 (in addition to her creative alliances with master craftspeople). \nIn addition to her creative alliances with master craftspeople\, Brätsch founded the collaborative DAS INSTITUT with German artist Adele Röder in 2007. Since 2010\, she has been working with the American artist Debo Eilers under the moniker KAYA. \nFounded in 2016 and based in NYC\, the artist collective CFGNY continually returns to the term "vaguely Asian": an understanding of racial identity as a specific cultural experience combined with the experience of being perceived as other. In addition to using fashion as a readymade\, CFGNY’s practice spans mediums such as video\, performance\, installation\, and sculpture\, researching the ways in which material assemblage and reproduction play a part in the formation and racialization of such “vaguely Asian” identities. CFGNY is uninterested in representing what it means to be “Asian” in the singular; instead\, it encourages the visualization of the countless ways one is able to be in the plural. CFGNY is composed of Daniel Chew\, Ten Izu\, Kirsten Kilponen\, and Tin Nguyen. Their project at SculptureCenter in 2023 included a collaboration with KAYA. \nContemporary Art Library is the resource of record for documentation of contemporary art. A free\, non-profit database of nearly 1 million images\, videos\, and documents\, the Library allows anyone to easily study the work of artists. Their project Contemporary Art Quarterly publishes four deep archives on the histories of important artists to the Library each year.

SUMMARY:Open Call for Ceramics - "Shardeology Making with the Future in Mind"
DESCRIPTION:In the distant future\, archeologists will unearth our fragments\, and try to decipher our chaotic\, transformative era. There will be bits of phones\, a lot of plastic. Will the clay shards surprise them? Clay is experiencing a vibrant renaissance – from functional to sculptural\, wood fired to painstaking pattern\, pinched to 3D printed. \nThis exhibition intends to embrace the whole of this moment’s ceramic universe. There is no hierarchy\, no excluded category. What have you made that is extraordinary? What shard do you want to leave behind? Let’s explore together. \nBackground of the curator: \nEric Lawrence received an MFA in film from Columbia University in 1983\, and went to work on commercials and television.\nEventually\, he came to his senses\, and started studying clay at Parsons School of Design\, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts\, which led to making and teaching ceramics all around New York for over 25 years. \nHe has shown with Long Island City Artists\, at Gallery North in Setauket\, LI\, and on Governor’s Island. He most recently exhibited earlier this year in Portal: Shifting Landscapes\, a show organized by 4Heads and ChaShaMa.  He has maintained a studio space at Brickhouse Ceramic Art Center in Long Island City since it opened.

DESCRIPTION:Pica-afflicted geologist Roach is documenting his van life road trip across America. When the anniversary of the death of his mother coincides with the unfortunate parole release of his ex who put her in the ground\, more than just his thesis on “the Mineral Compositions of America’s Greatest National Landmarks” is put into peril.  \ni’m going to eat you alive was a 2023 Semi-Finalist for the Eugene O’Neill National Playwriting Conference\, and was developed in Workshop Theater’s Trans Affinity Intensive\, led by Ashley Lauren Rogers and Al Parker. i’m going to eat you alive was first produced by Basement Light Productions at The Tank for a massively successful sold-out workshop in September 2023. SUMMARY:Chaos and Belief
DESCRIPTION: Xin: Chaos and BeliefOct. 4-24\, 2024\nCurated by Richard Vine\nOpening reception:\nOct. 5\, 2024\, 5-7 pm\, with a performance by the artist at 6:00 pm\nDialogue between Xin Song and Richard Vine: Oct. 24\, 5-6 pm\n“Chaos and Belief\,” a midcareer solo exhibition by Beijing-born\, New York-based artist Xin Song\, challenges every preconception viewers might have about Chinese papercutting. A folk art form with a roughly 2\,000-year history\, cutting paper into intricate abstract patterns or stylized representations of people\, flora\, animals\, or mixed scenes\, is a traditional way of decorating walls and window\, giving small gifts\, and marking special occasions such as holidays\, birthdays\, or anniversaries.\nLike all forms of “feudal” cultural legacy\, this practice was suppressed or neglected during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76)\, when Socialist Realism was the one-and-only officially sanctioned art style in China. Only after the death of Mao Zedong\, when both traditionalism and experimentation reemerged\, did papercutting win recognition as a modern-art practice.\nCurated by art critic Richard Vine\, “Chaos and Belief” is a compact survey of Song’s recent work\, emphasizing both its formal diversity and its playful yet deeply serious intent. The selection reveals that Song’s most popular works—those that highlight quilt-like patterns or floral motifs—stand halfway between the two poles of her ongoing artistic concern. One is the emotional turmoil at the center of our psychic life\, personal and collective; the other is our capacity for altruistic commitment. Thus images of flowers\, stylized waves\, and decorative abstractions share the gallery space with a huge\, turbulent installation whose twisting and curling paper streamers seem to explode from the wall. Offsetting this visual outburst is an orderly display of cutout portrait heads of some of the artist’s moral heroes—Che Guevara\, Aung San Suu Kyi\, Hilary Clinton\, Bruce Lee\, Laozi\, and others.\nThe complexity of Song’s vision places her in dialogue with other practitioners of global contemporary papercutting. Her work is edgier than that of Britain’s comforting Rob Ryan—the paper strips in some of Song’s earlier innocuous-seeming compositions were cut from porn magazines—but not as directly confrontational as Kara Walker’s classic antiracist silhouette nightmares. Song’s installations\, which fill and animate large spaces\, resonate with the cardboard extravaganzas of Thomas Hirsh\, and both artists owe a debt to the modernist master Kurt Schwitters and his legendary Merzbau. Jess and many other 20th century collagists are clearly antecedents\, and some viewers might detect a hint of painter Charles Burchfield in Song’s jittery\, vibrating way of constructing organic forms.\nIn her opening-night performance\, Song will rapidly\, volcanically\, fill an entire wall with cut and pinned paper. This galvanizing act\, a living mélange of materiality and force\, combines elements of Western performance art and Happenings with the longstanding East Asian belief that an artist can be a medium for the flow of the cosmic-organic energy known as qi.\n

SUMMARY:Away\, You Ethiop!
DESCRIPTION:Away\, You Ethiop! For Shakespeare lovers\, it's a line in A MidSummer Night's Dream. For actor/artist David Samuel\, it's the title of the solo show meets concept album meets short film that tells the story of what it was like to grow up the eldest son in an immigrant Habesha (Ethiopian/Eritrean) household in the DMV. Think of it as if RAMY was a Christian-raised\, fat East African and could also rap and produce music really well (like Donald Glover)\, and really loved the mediums of live theater and storytelling (like Shakespeare). He also has a sick impression of his Dad that really sounds nothing like his Dad. That's Away\, You Ethiop! \nDirected by Danaya Esperanza \nPERFORMANCE TIME:\n– Tuesday\, Oct. 15\, 2024 – 7:30PM

SUMMARY:DD Dorvillier - Dance is the archeologist\, or an idol in the bone.
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with L’Alliance New York’s Crossing The Line Festival. \nReturning to perform in the US for the first time in several years\, DD Dorvillier engages with her rich history as part of the downtown New York dance and performance scene throughout the 90s and 2000s. A French transplant since 2010\, Dorvillier’s latest solo — a collaboration with sound artist Sébastien Roux — is structured by four consecutive dance scores\, which emerged from a dream after dance practices and research on a handful of little-known archeological sites in France. Dorvillier dances\, digging through the series of scores\, and upon reaching the end\, begins again. The sound recorded from her first round of dances returns to accompany the second – a sonic ghost conjugating the present with the immediate past\, as she moves towards the future. \n“The contrast between my current rural village life in Burgundy (France) and years of artistic development in the bustling cultural centers of New York and later Paris has been an important catalyst: slowing down enough to consider the importance of dancing and making in a context where “culture ” means” growing things”. I understand the importance of my in-between position\, as I move freely between the vestiges of Dracy\, an abandoned medieval village by the cliffs above; and the dance studio La Corvette\, in our garden\, below.” – DD Dorvillier \nConcept\, performance: DD Dorvillier. Sound Design: Sébastien Roux. Light Design: Madeline Best. Artistic Collaborators: Mathieu Bouvier\, Carina Premer. Production: Laura Aknin. Intern: Hsin-Yu Tai.

SUMMARY:Take Root Presents: Jiemin Yang & Synergy Dance Collective NY/Nancy Brier
DESCRIPTION:October 18th & 19th at 8PMAdvance sale tickets: $20 online\nTickets purchased at door: $25 cash or card \n\nJiemin Yang\nPortraits of the Moon is an evocative contemporary dance project that explores the moon's profound symbolism in Chinese culture and examines the theme of separation and reunion among Asian immigrant populations in America. Inspired by ancient lunar myths\, poetry\, and the personal journeys of Asian immigrants\, this innovative production weaves together movement\, text\, and music to create a mesmerizing performance. By honoring Chinese cultural heritage and illuminating the experiences of immigrants within Asian communities\, Portraits of the Moon celebrates diverse identities and invites audiences to connect deeply and reflect on their own cultural roots and stories. \nSynergy Dance Collective NY / Nancy Brier\nA multidisciplinary suite blending dance\, live and recorded music\, spoken word and visual imagery\, Synergy Dance Collective NY’s Water Like This … Water Like That is a full length work-in-progress propelling viewers into the realm of water’s natural beauty\, torrential power and healing properties. It addresses the impact climate change has had on water and how people of the global majority are more likely to experience negative effects from pollution\, unsafe drinking water\, severe weather incidents\, marine plastic pollution and other environmental problems. Through “compassionate contemporary dance … filled with amazing lifts and partnering” (Moro\, QNS)\, Nancy Brier / Synergy Dance Collective NY uncovers our intimately deep connections to water and\, through a dynamic sensorial fusion of the arts\, asks what we can do to create positive change.
