SUMMARY:Skimming the Surface: Neuro-inclusive Movement Healing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Green Space & The Steven Spectrum Career Project Present a SKIMMING THE SURFACE: Neuro-Inclusive Movement Healing Workshop for Adults on April 28th at 7:00 PM. \n\nSkimming the Surface: Movement Healing Workshops aim to service those that may be overcoming diverse forms of trauma and stress through somatic based expressive movement exercises. This workshop for neurodivergent adults will help participants release blocked and repressed energy causing stress or discomfort in their life by integrating movement\, feelings\, and emotions. \n\nThe workshop helps participants confront emotional wounds and bring them to the surface in a gentle and compassionate way. When using the language of movement rather than words\, different images or emotions may arise\, which bypass the controlling and censoring mind. This experience leaves participants feeling expanded and curious about their emotions\, with new insights to move forward from. \n\nMore Information Here: https://www.danceentropy.org/…/skimming-the-surface… \n\nSuggested donation for registration is $25.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception | "Luana Vitra: Amulets" and "In Practice: Sam Cottington and Alejandro Villabona"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception celebrating “Luana Vitra: Amulets” and “In Practice: Sam Cottington and Alejandro Villabona.”\n\nLuana Vitra: Amulets\nOn View May 1 – Jul 28\, 2025\n\nSculptureCenter is pleased to present the first institutional exhibition in the United States of artist Luana Vitra. Luana Vitra’s practice is deeply intertwined with her home region of Minas Gerais\, Brazil. The mineral-rich state is known for its historical export of gold through forced labour and for its current prominence in the extractive iron mining industry. Through an abstract language that encompasses drawing\, painting\, performance\, sculpture\, and installation\, her work is interested in the metallurgical and transformative charge of minerals and their capacity for metamorphosis\, often creating a dialogue between the natural and industrial manifestations of materials.\n\nFor her SculptureCenter commission\, “Luana Vitra: Amulets\,” Vitra temporarily makes visible the threshold between the physical and spiritual presence of minerals through an energetically directed environment\, presenting minerals as ritual manifestation. They take shape in a new set of sculptures that include tall iron totems wrapped in white fabric and detailed with amarrações: knots that symbolise the act of sealing the gesture of intention at the moment of invoking a spell\, or as a way of enclosing it within. Amulets reinforces Vitra’s dedication to an aesthetic rooted in the spiritual. She invites visitors to look beyond sculptures’ material properties of sculpture and its circulation as commodities within a capitalist economy\, and to envision another dimension to which they belong. The mineral forms she conjures–often emerging first in dreams–become visual prayers\, spiritual manifestation\, or incantations.\n\n\n\nIn Practice: Sam Cottington and Alejandro Villabona\nOn View May 1 – Jun 9\, 2025\n\nSam Cottington and Alejandro Villabona will develop a new video installation and performance for SculptureCenter. Together their work condenses vocal fragments from an omnipresent cloud of popular media\, internet phenomena\, and personal communication into new monologues marked by ambivalent relations between speaker and receiver. Skirting context (and often clear content) in favor of sonic texture\, their texts capture a particular unsettled subjectivity and expressive range in the language of our time\, rapidly driving the tone of address from self-consciously performative\, to callous\, to menacing and manipulative.

SUMMARY:Love Your Mother Earth Mushroom Party at Museum of the Moving Image
DESCRIPTION:Join MoMI\, the New York Mycological Society\, and more special guests on Mother’s Day weekend to celebrate Mother Earth and observe the third kingdom of life: fungi. \nThe New York Mycological Society (NYMS)\, a volunteer-run organization founded by experimental composer John Cage in 1962\, will lead a walk around MoMI’s neighborhood exploring the mushrooms\, lichen\, and mycelium in our everyday landscape that we may not have noticed. Everyone with an interest in the living environment\, regardless of their level of knowledge of fungi\, is invited. Space is limited\, RSVP for the mycological walk. \nNext\, visual artist Caro Arévalo will help visitors document their finds with botanical illustrations. All skill levels are welcome\, and drawing supplies will be provided. \nThen\, software engineer and community biologist Sally Kong gives a presentation on fungal microscopy—the beautiful world of mushroom’s interior structures and microscopic elements. RSVP for the microscopy talk. \nMoMI then presents the not-to-be-missed New York City premiere of Fungi: Web of Life featuring noted mycologist Merlin Sheldrake and narrated by Björk. Space is limited\, RSVP for the screening. \nSchedule of activities: \n12:00 p.m.: Meet for the mycological walk in the MoMI Lobby \n12:30–1:30 p.m.: NYMS neighborhood mycological walk from MoMI \n1:30-2:30 p.m.: NYMS ID session \n2:30-3:15 p.m.: Fungi: Web of Life screening \n3:00-4:30 p.m.: Guided mushroom drawing with botanical illustrator Caro Arévalo (drop-in) \n3:30-4:30 p.m.: Fungal Microscopy demo with scientist-artist Sally Kong \nSpecial guests: \nCaro Arévalo is a Peruvian visual artist whose artwork explores the plant and fungi kingdoms\, via the naked eye and microscopes. From her Amazonian heritage\, Caro embraces the interconnectedness of all beings\, the significance of rituals and ancestral wisdom in deepening our connection with nature\, inviting us to cultivate more love towards ourselves and our planet. @caro.arevalo \nVictoria Bayevskiy is a naturalist\, amateur mycologist\, and walk leader at NYMS. Growing up mushroom hunting with her grandmother instilled in her a lifelong love of fungi. With a background in psychology and ecology\, she is passionate about urban green space access and helping more people connect with nature. She is particularly interested in mycorrhizal connections and the ecological relationships fungi foster. \nMaya Han is the Cultural Coordinator for NYMS and the founder of the Myco Film Festival. She has an extensive engagement with NYC’s art\, film\, literary\, music\, and BIPOC communities. As a mycophile\, artist\, filmmaker\, and writer\, she is passionate about excavating hidden histories\, alternative world making\, and community building. \nSally Kong is a software engineer\, artist\, and a community biologist. She has built artist tools and 3D production pipelines for feature animation and games at Blue Sky Studios\, Netflix\, and Rockstar Games. A member of NYMS\, she has led fungal DNA and microscopy workshops. She is currently the lead of the Microbial Reef community project\, exploring the impact of oyster reefs on microbial communities and the biogeochemical cycling in our local waterways. She holds a BSE in Digital Media Design and a MSE in Robotics from the University of Pennsylvania. \nWilton Rao is an engineer\, naturalist\, and walk leader at NYMS. As an amateur mycologist\, he specializes in the diversity of urban lichens. Passionate about urbanism\, ecology\, and their intersection\, he spends his time documenting the wildlife of NYC in every park\, lawn\, and train platform he explores. \nMisha Zitser is a naturalist and walk leader at NYMS. He has spent the last five years observing and documenting the flora\, fauna and fungi of NYC. He is a prolific contributor to several iNaturalist projects\, including “New York City EcoFlora” and “Fungi of NYC”\, a project that was created by NYMS to document the fungal diversity of New York City.
