SUMMARY:People in Public by Danie Kohn - New Works Festival at Culture Lab LIC - November 7 - 10
DESCRIPTION:People in Public is a contemporary circus show by Danie Kohn focused on spontaneous and brief moments of connection\, unique to the urban environment. In a series of interconnected vignettes\, the cast explores how we interact and find moments of humanity with complete strangers. In daily life\, we are often alone together; On a train\, in a laundromat\, in a crowd… But sometimes\, we break out of that solitary mentality\, lock eyes with a stranger\, and share a brief smile or understanding before the disappear back into the crowd. \nCircus is integrated into the set and setting\, a natural part of the world. Aerial hoops become washing machines in a laundromat\, pigeons perch on a trapeze\, the rush hour subway bustle is composed of acrobatic movement. \nPeople in Public uses both ground and aerial movement\, and is composed of a large ensemble cast\, made up of talented artists local to New York City. It stands as a love letter to cities\, to spontaneous connection and\, especially\, to the magic in between. \nThursday\, November 7\, 7:30pm\nFriday\, November 8\, 7:30pm\nSaturday\, November 9\, 5:30pm\nSunday\, November 10\, 5:30pm \nTickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/new-works-festival-3648629

SUMMARY:Levi Gonzalez - Hoary
DESCRIPTION:Performances will take place at The Chocolate Factory Theater\, 38-33 24th Street\, Long Island City. \n“We started with the idea of fairy tales as portals into queerness\, transformation and the indulging of forbidden desires; a resistance to the numbing effects of normativity. Hoary is a practice of being in our bodies\, of not knowing something but making something anyways.” \n“Addressing site is an integral aspect of this practice; we create semi-fictional histories and sonic resonances in each location the work is researched\, employing language\, sound and vocal utterance as vibratory tools that give animacy and agency to place. This activates the audience’s potential for a sensory and imaginative attunement to their environment\, creating new possibilities for our shared perception and behavior. Decentering empirical human concepts of knowledge\, we disrupt our encultured nervous system responses and move beyond the shortcomings of late capitalist embodied experience by embracing ambiguity\, fluidity\, and the not yet known.” \nPerformers: Levi Gonzalez\, Kayvon Pourazar\, Rebecca Serrell Cyr. \nPerformer/Composer: Senem Pirler. Costume Design/Consultant: jmy james kidd. \nLighting Designer: Madeline Best.

SUMMARY:Opening Night at RoGallery Museum of LIC
DESCRIPTION:Long Island City\, NY – RoGallery is pleased to announce the opening of our new sister institution\, RoGallery Museum of LIC\, which opens on November 14th\, 2024. Please join us for a celebration with entertainment by Tony Desare from 4 to 8 p.m. at the museum\, located at 37-02 48th Avenue\, LIC\, NY 11101.  \n  \nThis celebration will also launch the opening of several individual exhibitions featuring the works of artists such as Marina Abramović\, Josef Albers\, Richard Anuszkiewicz\, Benjamin Benno\, Chryssa\, Marshall Goodman\, Michael Knigin\, Andy Warhol\, and more. These exhibitions will all be open for guests to view during the reception and will remain open until early 2025. Please see below for excerpts on the exhibitions or read about them in further detail on the museum website – www.RoGalleryMuseumofLIC.com. \n  \nBenjamin Benno: Making Modernity \nBenjamin Benno's career spanned perhaps the full range of Modern art. This exhibition celebrates a few key highlights from his practice\, showing select pieces that are the best examples of movements like Impressionism\, Cubism\, and Abstract Expressionism. \n  \nMechanisms and Monoliths \nThis exhibition looks at monumental artworks from a series of remarkable artists. Featuring art by Marina Abramović\, Chryssa\, Cork Marcheschi\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Mel Ramos\, Shirley Shor\, and Andy Warhol\, each piece is a point of reverence that directs the viewer to contemplate at a larger scale what worship looks like in a mechanical and commodified age.  \n  \nRemembering the Holocaust: Then and Now \nMichael Knigin built a practice off of Pop Art juxtaposition\, contrasting opposing themes\, aesthetics\, media\, and symbols to create works in constant dialogue with themselves. The works shown in Then and Now all stem from a common theme centered around the violence of the Holocaust and the societal fallout that followed it over multiple decades.  \n  \nSacred Geometry \nIn certain systems of belief\, there is an understanding that specific geometric shapes and configurations hold sacred meaning. While none of the artists in this exhibition believed innately in those concepts\, there is a reverence for the purity of mathematical forms in each of the included works. Featuring art by: Josef Albers\, Richard Anuszkiewicz\, and Mark Kostabi. \n  \nThe Paintings of Marshall Goodman \nMarshall Goodman's paintings are fleeting glimpses of scenes that feel both surreal and intimate. Goodman's style reflects a casual humanity that was first captured by the Impressionists. Goodman approaches every fleeting moment with sincerity and sensibility. \n\n  \n  \n\n  \nMuseum Hours \n  \nThe Museum is open by appointment only Wednesday – Friday between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. \n  \nWalk-in appointments cannot be made at this time. Reservations can be made by emailing Info@RoGalleryMuseumofLIC.com directly or through the reservations link on the RoGallery Museum website. The museum is now available for booking for future events. \n  \n37-02 48th Avenue \nLong Island City\, NY 11101 \nTel. 347-396-5244 \nwww.RoGalleryMuseumofLIC.com

Duplex includes live music and improvisation as we continue to explore what's unsaid. \nPele Bauch Performance\nWhere does everything come from? Are we all stardust? Ho'o Infinity explores these questions taking inspiration from the Kumulipo\, a historical chant that charts the final Hawaiian monarchy's genealogical path from the beginning of time. Layering poetics and science with dance and theater\, this new work begins with the lipo darkness and emptiness and evolves to generous abundance. The creative team includes choreographer\, co-creator\, performer Pele Bauch; co-creator\, director Eva Burgess; performer collaborators Erika Comrie-Krupa and Jessie Winograd; dramaturg and performer\, Kahu Oli Lae O'o Kris Kato.\n

With Barry Newman\, Cleavon Little\, Dean Jagger. Friday\, midnight\, somewhere in Denver\, Colorado\, car service driverKowalski (Newman) bets his drug dealer he can deliver his white 1970 Dodge Challenger toSan Francisco by 3 p.m. He burns rubber with a growing police phalanx hot on his tail. Showcasing the greatest sequence of car chase stunts in the history of cinema\, Vanishing Point pulls double duty as a post-’68 allegory for the closing of the American frontier.  \nThe great American car chase movie\, directed by maverick Armenian-American filmmaker Richard C. Sarafian\, is nominally the saga of a Vietnam vet on the lam in his Dodge Challenger\, but it’s simultaneously a modern-day Western\, a dystopian allegory\, and a love letter to the muscle car. A cult classic\, adored by artists and filmmakers from Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg to Bruce Springsteen\, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Alberto Moravia\, Vanishing Point had a storied production\, the lore and legends of which are now lovingly collected in Robert M. Rubin’s mythic illustrated account Vanishing Point Forever.

SUMMARY:Anna Martine Whitehead - FORCE! an opera in three acts
DESCRIPTION:Performances will take place at The Chocolate Factory Theater\, 38-33 24th Street\, Long Island City. \nNovember 22-23\, 2024\nFriday November 22 at 7pm\nSaturday November 23 at 2pm and 7pm \nCo-presented with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics. \nFORCE! is an opera\, but what is an opera? If opera means “big work\,” what could be blacker? In this big work\, characters become fractals for the abundant relationships blooming in the shadows of the state and carceral power. In this big work\, a constellation imagines a strange sisterhood with the power to disintegrate walls. \nSince late 2019\, FORCE! has developed as an iterative re-imagining of performance practice\, constantly re-centering care\, consent\, queer divergence\, and rest. The FORCE! constellation re-imagines rehearsal protocols and lets loose discipline to build an abolition feminist theatre practice. This project gathers lessons from lichens\, direct actions\, mutual aid societies\, and other emergent strategies to leverage sound and movement as vectors for processing state violence and racial capitalism. As audiences travel with performers through space\, sound\, and silence\, the boundaries between them become increasingly less important. Using the prison as a particular prism through which we can bear witness to the ways carceral systems replicate themselves\, FORCE! is also an attempt to abolish the Prison Industrial Complex in our heads\, hearts\, and houses. \nCo-composers: Angel Bat Dawid\, Ayanna Woods\, Anna Martine Whitehead. Music Direction: Ayanna Woods\, Teiana Davis. Dancers: Jenn Po’Chop Freeman\, Zachary Nicol\, Rahila Coats. Musicians: Eva Supreme\, Daniella Pruitt\, Nexus J\, Kai Black\, Wyatt Waddell\, Teiana Davis. Costume Designer: Sky Cubacub. \nFORCE! is a Vera List Center Fellowship-commissioned project and is supported by research assistance\, production grants\, and curatorial support by the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School as part of its Correction* Focus Theme. The New York premiere of FORCE! is additionally commissioned by The Chocolate Factory Theater. \nThe creation of FORCE! is supported by Pivot Arts\, University of Chicago Arts + Public Life\, St. Benedict the African Parish\, The Graham Foundation for the Advanced Study of Fine Arts\, Vera List Center for Art and Politics\, The Chocolate Factory Theater\, 3Arts / 3AP\, New England Foundation for the Arts / National Theater Project\, National Performance Network / Creation Fund\, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Northwestern University / Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Centers\, House of the Lorde. This presentation of FORCE! is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. \nFORCE! is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by The Chocolate Factory Theater\, On the Boards\, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts\, REDCAT/California Institute of the Arts\, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art\, and NPN.

SUMMARY:Come Alive: The Films of Lana Wilson
DESCRIPTION:In a little more than a decade\, Lana Wilson has established herself as one of the most compelling and accomplished nonfiction filmmakers of her generation. Over the course of five features and two episodic series\, she’s pushed the bounds of each form\, devising singularaesthetic and storytelling strategies; reappropriating celebrity portraiture for a richer thematic exploration; and summoning the creative spirits motivating (and often troubling) those she’sfilmed—regardless of their relationship to the arts. This complete\, early-career retrospective celebrates an Emmy-winning and two-time Spirit Award–nominated filmmaker of uncommon dexterity and integrity\, including her patient and observant look at third-trimester abortion doctors and their patients\, After Tiller (co-directed by Martha Shane); her unusually intimate\, unmistakably feminist portraits of superstars Taylor Swift (Miss Americana) and Brooke Shields (Pretty Baby); and her sui generis\, impeccably crafted works of heart-swollen humanism such as The Departure and her latest\, Look into My Eyes\, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and was produced and distributed by A24.

SUMMARY:Artist & Curator Talk: Afterlives with Álvaro Urbano\, Jess Wilcox\, and Jeremy Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Álvaro Urbano: TABLEAU VIVANT builds a speculative bridge in time and space between artists\, sites\, and choreographies of public and private life. For his exhibition at SculptureCenter\, artist Álvaro Urbano focuses on a potential ruin\, or a ruin in progress: Atrium Furnishment\, a public artwork from 1984–85 by the American sculptor Scott Burton (1939–1989) that was rescued from destruction and now faces an uncertain future. \nJoin Urbano and independent curators Jess Wilcox and Jeremy Johnston for a three-part afternoon program on Urbano’s exhibition\, its restaging of the marble material of Burton’s almost-lost artwork\, and new perspectives on the life and work of Scott Burton by two curators whose efforts have deepened our understanding the many issues in contemporary art Burton’s legacy incites. \nÁlvaro Urbano Artist Talk \nÁlvaro Urbano introduces TABLEAU VIVANT (his current exhibition at SculptureCenter\, on view Sep 19\, 2024–Mar 24\, 2025) and the ongoing artistic concerns that guide his work across media and through histories of art\, architecture\, and environment. \nÁlvaro Urbano is a Madrid-born and Berlin-based artist whose site-responsive practice involves an archeology of desires and past intentions. Formally trained as an architect\, Urbano draws on affective responses to built environments\, excavating narratives that are embedded in these built bodies. The exercise of recreating and reframing art\, architecture\, and literature becomes an intimate exploration of the subjectivity of other artists and the social contexts in which their spaces were considered functional\, innovative\, or condemned to oblivion. \nJess Wilcox on Scott Burton \nJess Wilcox is an independent curator based in New York City and the Hudson Valley. She is the curator of Scott Burton: Shape Shift\, the most comprehensive exhibition of Scott Burton’s work ever mounted in the United States\, on view at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis from Sep 6\, 2024–Feb 2\, 2025. \nJess Wilcox’s curatorial work has a focus on sculpture\, ecocritical and public art. From 2016 to 2022\, she was Curator and Director of Exhibitions at Socrates Sculpture Park. From 2011 to 2015\, she worked at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Wilcox has held positions at MoMA\, the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Performa\, Abrons Art Center\, and SculptureCenter. She has a BA from Barnard College and an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. At SculptureCenter\, Wilcox curated In Practice: Under Foundations as Curatorial Fellow in 2015. \nJeremy Johnston on Atrium Furnishment: removal\, afterlife\, future \nCurator Jeremy Johnston saved Scott Burton’s Atrium Furnishment (1984–85) from near destruction during a renovation of Equitable Center in 2020. From within Álvaro Urbano’s restaging of elements of Burton’s work\, Johnston reflects on Burton’s legacy and how to understand art objects after they have “ended” – whether through conservation\, archival work\, reprisals\, reenactments\, or other sustaining strategies. \nJeremy Johnston is a founding member of Darling Green\, a collaborative curatorial practice\, which has worked with the United Nations\, Bard Graduate Center\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, MoMA PS1\, Museum for African Art\, Performa\, and American Folk Art Museum. He is Curator of the Equitable Art Collection and a core faculty member of the The Interdisciplinary Art and Theory program. Darling Green’s work on Scott Burton’s Atrium Furnishment has been developed in collaboration with Soft Network.
