SUMMARY:The Search for Utopia - Opening Reception -Slovakian/American Art Exhibition - July 13\, 6pm
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION – DATE CHANGE: We've received word that artwork from Slovakian artists for our exhibition\, The Search for Utopia\, is stuck in customs! Due to this unexpected delay\, the exhibition's opening reception has been moved from Thursday\, July 11 to Saturday\, July 13\, 6-9pm. \nWe will still be offering the same wonderful experience we always do with bites and refreshments\, this time alongside our LIVE! outdoor music. \nBe sure to arrive early at 3PM for an ARTISTS TALK in our theater and a chance to meet and chat with the artists from the exhibition! The opening reception will follow. \nThe Search for Utopia explores the contemporary definition of 'Utopia' – is it a future to aspire towards\, yet to be discovered\, or a nostalgic quest for something lost? This art exhibition transcends borders\, uniting the creative voices of Slovakian and American artists. Showcasing a diverse collection of dynamic works across various mediums\, it offers viewers a profound insight into each artist's unique perspective and cultural heritage. Featuring contributions from four Slovakian artists and four American artists\, each piece acts as a catalyst for introspection\, encouraging viewers to reconsider the concept of utopia in our increasingly interconnected and diverse world. \nCurated by Tess Howsam and Soňa Jakubove \, the exhibition reflects an international collaboration between arts and cultural institutions\, Culture Lab LIC and Malý Berlín . \nCulture Lab LIC\n5-25 46th Avenue\, Long Island City\, New York\, NY 11101 \nhttps://www.culturelablic.org/current-exhibitions

SUMMARY:John Ford's The Searchers in 70mm
DESCRIPTION:To kick off it's annual summer 70mm film festival\, Museum of the Moving Image presents John Ford's enduring 1956 masterpiece "The Searchers." The film will be showing 7 times from July 18–July 21.  \nDir. John Ford. 1956\, 119 mins. U.S. New 70mm print from a restoration by Warner Bros in collaboration with The Film Foundation. With John Wayne\, Jeffrey Hunter\, Vera Miles\, Ward Bond\, Natalie Wood. Martin Scorsese has claimed that he watches this film\, arguably western master Ford’s greatest achievement\, every year\, and with good reason. Its epic story sweeps from the American Southwest to the Canadian border as it tracks Wayne’s increasingly unhinged quest for his beloved niece\, kidnapped by Chief Scar in a raid years before. Wayne’s Ethan Edwards is as neurotically obsessed as DeNiro’s Travis Bickle. Thanks to this staggering new restoration\, screening here in a newly struck 70mm print\, scanned from the original 35mm VistaVision camera negative and approved by The Film Foundation\, making its East Coast big-screen debut\, The Searchers has never looked more richly beautiful. \nTickets: $20 ($15 for MoMI members).

SUMMARY:QED Spotlight: Matt Storrs and Tristan Miller
DESCRIPTION:QED Astoria is spotlighting two brilliant comedians\, Matt Storrs and Tristan Miller\, in July! Venture to QED on Thursday\, July 18th at 7:30pm and be transported to prehistoric lands and the Upper Midwest as the two comedians present solo shows in a comedy double-feature! \nABOUT THE TWO SHOWS \nJurassic Heartbreak \nBy Matt Storrs \nMatt Storrs has never loved anything more than his first love: dinosaurs. After romantic rejection in elementary school\, Matt copes by starting a movement to advocate for his favorite dinosaur and get the governor of Arizona recalled. \nYears later\, after another failed romantic connection\, a trip to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show puts Matt face to face with the illegal fossil trade. Matt unearths new knowledge that makes him question his first love.  \nWill newfound knowledge allow him to forgive and find lasting love? You won’t have to wait 65 million years to find out.  \n  \nLeast Likely to Succeed: Tales from a Midwestern Homeschooler \nBy Tristan Miller \nNew York-based comedian Tristan Miller makes light of their experience growing up in the Midwest as a homeschooler.  \nIn Least Likely to Succeed\, Tristan discusses growing up in the Midwest\, their trip to New Zealand\, teaching\, being homeschooled\, and shares a grab bag of characters and impressions.  \n  \nABOUT THE TWO COMEDIANS \nMatt Storrs\nMatt Storrs (Edinburgh Fringe Festival and SF Sketchfest) is a comedian and storyteller based out of NYC and originally from Phoenix\, AZ. Matt created and performed two one-person shows “Portly Lutheran Know-It-All” about his time attending a religious middle school and “Jurassic Heartbreak” about his lifelong love of dinosaurs. He has also been featured on NPR. Matt brings his legal background to the stage with his sharp stories and esoteric comedy. Matt Storrs is a humor person. \nTristan Miller\nTristan Miller is an award-winning actor\, writer\, and comedian who has been featured in The Midwinter Madness and Laughing Devil Festivals\, along with The Minnesota and Kansas City Fringe Festivals. Tristan uses their sardonic wit and goofy midwestern sensibilities to lighten many heavier topics\, such as mental health\, religion\, identity\, and American politics.

SUMMARY:Screening: Black Rio! Black Power!
DESCRIPTION:This fascinating documentary explores the transformative power of soul music in 1970s Rio de Janeiro\, where dance events became crucial spaces for the political affirmation and resistance of the young black community. Through the lens of the Black Rio Movement\, the film highlights the role of music in the struggle for racial equality during Brazil’s military dictatorship and traces its enduring influence on genres like hip–hop and funk. It also examines the movement’s legacy on Black pride\, aesthetic values\, and the ongoing fight for racial justice\, as seen through the experiences of movement leaders like Dom Filó and the impact on subsequent generations. (Dir. Emilio Domingos. 2023\, 70 mins. Brazil. DCP. In Portuguese with English subtitles.) \nCo-presented by Brasil Summerfest\, as part of Las Premieres\, co-presented by Cinema Tropical. \nFeaturing an introduction by DJ and musicologist Greg Caz. \nTickets: $15 with discounts for seniors\, students\, and youth.

SUMMARY:Jacques Tati's Playtime in 70mm
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Jacques Tati. 1967\, 115 mins. France. 70mm. With Jacques Tati\, Barbara Dennek\, Rita Maiden. Tati’s artistic ambitions knew no bounds—for this bank-breaking comic masterpiece\, he built Tativille\, a sprawling set that was virtually an entire city. The iconic M. Hulot arrives in this ultramodern metropolis and stumbles through its many architectural absurdities. Playtime is wall-to-wall with brilliantly choreographed jokes and astonishing compositions; Tati crams so many sight gags into each frame that they’re impossible to catch on the small screen.  \nPart of the Museum's annual summer 70mm film festival\, See It Big: 70mm. Tickets are $20.

SUMMARY:BALLET FOLKLÓRICO MEXICANO DE NUEVA YORK’S GUELAGUETZA
DESCRIPTION:It’s Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York (BFMNY)’s Annual Guelaguetza Festival and that’s something to celebrate! The term guelaguetza is a Zapotec word meaning “offering” or also “reciprocal exchange of gifts and services” and we’re excited to take part. \nThis summer celebration originated in Oaxaca City\, Mexico\, where representatives of the eight regions of Oaxaca gather together wearing traditional costumes to dance\, sing\, and give gifts to the crowd; creating strong bonds between the different regions. Each region offers a unique contribution to the festivities — like the much-loved “Dance of the Pineapple!” \nBFMNY is dedicated to preserving the culture and traditions of Mexico\, not only with the beauty of Mexican folkloric dance and music\, but also building strong bridges toward a more culturally diverse society.

SUMMARY:2001: A Space Odyssey in 70mm
DESCRIPTION:A cornerstone of the Museum's annual See It Big: 70mm film festival\, "2001: A Space Odyssey" will screen six times\, August 1–8\, 2024. As brilliantly engineered as the space program itself\, Stanley Kubrick’s mysterious and profound sci-fi epic—“the ultimate trip”—is about nothing less than the beauty and the banality of civilization\, blending cool satire\, an elaborate vision of the future\, and passages of avant-garde cinematic inventiveness. Set in a future that is already the past\, 2001 envisions space travel as both hilariously routine and mind-bending\, a journey to the infinite and beyond that forever changed the way we see the universe and cinema itself. As experienced on 70mm in MoMI’s Redstone Theater\, Kubrick’s surreal masterwork still has the ability to conduct viewers to untold\, unknowable realms of artistry and daring.

SUMMARY:Alexa West "Open Rehearsals"
DESCRIPTION:From July to mid-August at SculptureCenter\, artist\, dancer\, and choreographer Alexa West shifts the static nature of the exhibition space into an active area—an open creative process that the public is invited to observe and engage with. Trained in the Martha Graham technique and sculpture\, both areas influence her practice\, which is currently centered on performance and choreography. Smoothly merging her interests in movement and three-dimensional forms\, at SculptureCenter she focuses on creating a new work. At various moments during the week\, West prepares costumes\, drafts a score\, builds props\, and rehearses with dancers. While the finalized performance’s structure and presentation are yet to be determined\, this project focuses on the stage of development. \nWest’s work in production reinterprets choreographer George Balanchine’s ballet rendition of Orpheus (premiered in 1948)\, itself an adaptation of the Greek myth of the musician-poet and his struggle to rescue his wife Eurydice from Hades. Drawing inspiration from the 1940s production\, West shifts the perspective to Eurydice and the production’s Isamu Noguchi set design elements\, which included a lyre\, a face mask for Orpheus\, and several large boulders that lift up to depict the descent to Hades. In West’s version\, “Eurydice secretly desires to remain in the underworld\, she loves hell\, and she makes relentless efforts to persuade Orpheus to turn around.” Like Noguchi’s\, West’s running repertoire of set designs\, which have included tables\, electric curtains\, filing cabinets\, a stack of papers\, and a painter’s scaffold\, often serve as other characters in a performance\, affecting and determining the dancers’ movements. For her scores\, West often collages various sound effects such as car honks\, soft electronic music notes\, doorbell chimes\, pop song clips\, voice recordings\, laughs\, weather announcements\, or commercials. For this project\, she will create a soundscape that engages with and is shaped by the lower level's distinct cavernous materiality. \nThis performance study explores the site of SculptureCenter’s lower level in collaboration with the dancers. Together\, they build movement sequences and character arcs with source materials interlaced with originally created phrases\, informing the creation of the new work. It will not take on a narrative structure but will rather communicate the dancer's roles through movement quality and body language as a deconstructed narrative. \n________________________ \nAlexa West rehearsals and “Open Rehearsals” Schedule \nWest rehearses with dancers on the following days: \nFri\, July 5 and Sat\, July 6\n12-4pm \nThu\, July 11 – Sun\, July 14\n12-4pm \nThu\, July 18 – Sat\, July 20\n12-4pm \nThu\, July 25 – Sun\, July 28\n12-4pm \nWest and the collaborating dancers will present a sketch of the new work during “Open Rehearsals” on the following days\, followed by drinks in the courtyard: \nFri\, Aug 2\n4-6pm \nSun\, Aug 4\n4-6pm \nMon\, Aug 5\n4-6pm \nThu\, Aug 8\n4-6pm \nThe dancers are: Sharleen Chidiac\, Benin Gardner\, Jade Manns\, and Isa Spector \n________________________ \nThis project is part of Open Process\, a new series where SculptureCenter hands over the lower level gallery to artists and collectives to work on an ongoing project or to develop a new one during the time of their exhibition. The program is an invitation to experiment with the exhibition form as an unfixed\, durational\, and dialogical process. Open Process welcomes unscripted encounters\, learning opportunities\, and collective exercises that open the institution to different facets of the artist's practice and provide a chance for an extended engagement with their process and methodologies.
