SUMMARY:jess pretty - call and response
DESCRIPTION:In call and response\, jess pretty wraps her audience in a conceptual\, and literal\, embrace. Unfolding as a dance-based\, experiential conversation – between pretty and her younger selves\, her ancestors\, and everybody else in the room – call and response is a kind of casual\, yet devotional\, soirèe or salon or kickback\, with pretty as the host. \nWithin an environment of familiar (and familial) comforts – living room furniture\, record player\, books and plants; all of it bathed in continuous\, deep blue light – call and response doles out laughter and music as soft (and generous) launching points for an experience of memory and reflection that is shared and felt as much as it is witnessed. It endeavors to slow down the room; and invites us to join in the attempt. \nChoreographer / Performer: jess pretty. Creative Interlocutors: keyon gaskin & Niall Jones. Lighting Design / Tech Support / Set Design: Maggie Heath. DJ / Sound Practitioner: Tyler Hughley / DJ Luccihugh. Sound Consultant: Jeremy Touissaint-Baptiste.

SUMMARY:New Material Night: a Standup Comedy show - Pride Edition!
DESCRIPTION:Every 2nd and 4th Thursday\, comedian Lauren Hope Krass (Betches Media\, HBO Women In Comedy Festival) and Dan Frank (New York Comedy Festival\, PN&Friends) are bringing together New York’s funniest comics to test out their newest bits. Before a joke appears on a televised special or on an album\, it lives a fascinating life of twists and turns. The rules are simple: Laugh if it's funny… And maybe politely fake laugh a little if it’s not because hey\, trying new things is hard! This show is a favorite of Time Out New York and you just can’t bottle the infectious energy that erupts every single show. This is a guaranteed good time for a solo outing\, date night or group hang. We of course also highly recommended this show to all our beloved Astoria comedy nerds. This is where the magic happens! \nCome celebrate Pride with this lineup of all LGBTQ+ comedians! with\nCaitlin Reese\nJilberto Soto\nSrilatha Rajamani\nKeenan Steiner\nOtter Lee\nCalvin Cato\nRyan Erwin\nJay Elliot\nDan Frank

SUMMARY:Screenings: 100 Years of Parajanov
DESCRIPTION:Born in 1926 to Armenian parents in multicultural Tbilisi\, Georgia\, Sergei Parajanov was a filmmaker unlike any other\, a versatile genius with the moving image distinguished through atmospheric mise-en-scène\, sumptuous colors\, opulent settings\, and unforgettable imagery. Already a trained musician in violin and song before he attended Moscow’s prestigious VGIK (All-Union State Institute of Cinematography) at the age of 21\, Parajanov first broke through when he broke with the U.S.S.R.’s socialist realist doctrine with his seminal Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964) and his crown-jewel The Color of Pomegranates (1968). Increasingly outspoken against the Soviet regime\, Parajanov would see many of his scripts rejected by state authorities\, and he would be arrested and imprisoned several times over the subsequent decades\, though his international esteem grew to the level of myth. Parajanov passed away in July 1990. “With the death of Sergei Parajanov cinema lost one of its magicians\,” wrote Federico Fellini. MoMI is proud to present a selection of the greatest works of this revolutionary artist and humanist on the occasion of his centenary.

SUMMARY:Conversation with Miljohn Ruperto and Paul Pfeiffer
DESCRIPTION:Join artist and author Miljohn Ruperto for a presentation in the style of a “guide” to his new booklet edition\, An Operational Account of Western Spatio-Temporality\, followed by a conversation with artist Paul Pfeiffer. \nAn Operational Account of Western Spatio-Temporality comprises three flipbooks and an accordion-fold booklet. The booklet presents an essay that examines three forms of time as philosophized by the Ancient Greeks—aion\, chronos\, and kairos—to map the boundaries of and discern the influences of Western spatio-temporality. The essay serves as a guiding narrative to help readers identify the source or essence of Western subjectivity. \nEach of Ruperto’s flipbooks depicts a disembodied head in movement. “The Baroque Is a Geometric Imposition Upon Wild Nature” features the head of Medusa; “History Awaits Immanence\,” the head of John the Baptist; and “Western Temporalities Incline Towards a Tripartite Structure\,” a triface image of Christ. Each of these figures is drawn from classical art historical references. \nAn Operational Account of Western Spatio-Temporality was designed by artist\, designer\, and independent curator Margaret Tedesco and published by X Projects. Purchase the booklet via X Projects now. Copies will be available on site at SculptureCenter during the event. \nMiljohn Ruperto lives and works in Los Angeles. Ruperto is interested in developing approaches to interrogating and expanding our conception of nature and history: e.g. historiography\, the history of nature\, and the nature of nature. \nPaul Pfeiffer lives and works in New York. Known for his highly sophisticated use of digital technologies and new media\, Pfeiffer edits iconic images or found footage of sporting events\, concerts\, or Hollywood films to explore our culture’s obsession with spectacle and uncover its hidden psychological cost.

SUMMARY:From the Margins: The Trans Film Image
DESCRIPTION:In their new book Corpses\, Fools\, and Monsters: The History and Future of Transness in Cinema\, critics Caden Mark Gardner and Willow Catelyn Maclay examine how trans themes and trans people have evolved on screen over the past 60-plus years. In this new screening series at MoMI\, Gardner and Maclay have programmed a selection of films that speak to the breadth of expression of their analysis\, including films from artists as wide-ranging as American auteur Robert Altman\, European iconoclasts Rosa von Praunheim and Alain Berliner\, and groundbreaking contemporary American-Filipino trans filmmaker Isabel Sandoval. On July 13\, Gardner will appear in person to introduce screenings and for a post-screening book signing; Sandoval will also appear in person for a Q&A with Gardner following a screening of Lingua Franca.

SUMMARY:The Search for Utopia - Opening Reception -Slovakian/American Art Exhibition - July 13\, 6pm
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION – DATE CHANGE: We've received word that artwork from Slovakian artists for our exhibition\, The Search for Utopia\, is stuck in customs! SUMMARY:John Ford's The Searchers in 70mm
DESCRIPTION:To kick off it's annual summer 70mm film festival\, Museum of the Moving Image presents John Ford's enduring 1956 masterpiece "The Searchers." The film will be showing 7 times from July 18–July 21.  \nDir. John Ford. 1956\, 119 mins. U.S. New 70mm print from a restoration by Warner Bros in collaboration with The Film Foundation. With John Wayne\, Jeffrey Hunter\, Vera Miles\, Ward Bond\, Natalie Wood. Martin Scorsese has claimed that he watches this film\, arguably western master Ford’s greatest achievement\, every year\, and with good reason. Its epic story sweeps from the American Southwest to the Canadian border as it tracks Wayne’s increasingly unhinged quest for his beloved niece\, kidnapped by Chief Scar in a raid years before. Wayne’s Ethan Edwards is as neurotically obsessed as DeNiro’s Travis Bickle. Thanks to this staggering new restoration\, screening here in a newly struck 70mm print\, scanned from the original 35mm VistaVision camera negative and approved by The Film Foundation\, making its East Coast big-screen debut\, The Searchers has never looked more richly beautiful. \nTickets: $20 ($15 for MoMI members).

SUMMARY:QED Spotlight: Matt Storrs and Tristan Miller
DESCRIPTION:QED Astoria is spotlighting two brilliant comedians\, Matt Storrs and Tristan Miller\, in July! Venture to QED on Thursday\, July 18th at 7:30pm and be transported to prehistoric lands and the Upper Midwest as the two comedians present solo shows in a comedy double-feature! \nABOUT THE TWO SHOWS \nJurassic Heartbreak \nBy Matt Storrs \nMatt Storrs has never loved anything more than his first love: dinosaurs. After romantic rejection in elementary school\, Matt copes by starting a movement to advocate for his favorite dinosaur and get the governor of Arizona recalled. \nYears later\, after another failed romantic connection\, a trip to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show puts Matt face to face with the illegal fossil trade. Matt unearths new knowledge that makes him question his first love.  \nWill newfound knowledge allow him to forgive and find lasting love? You won’t have to wait 65 million years to find out.  \n  \nLeast Likely to Succeed: Tales from a Midwestern Homeschooler \nBy Tristan Miller \nNew York-based comedian Tristan Miller makes light of their experience growing up in the Midwest as a homeschooler.  \nIn Least Likely to Succeed\, Tristan discusses growing up in the Midwest\, their trip to New Zealand\, teaching\, being homeschooled\, and shares a grab bag of characters and impressions.  \n  \nABOUT THE TWO COMEDIANS \nMatt Storrs\nMatt Storrs (Edinburgh Fringe Festival and SF Sketchfest) is a comedian and storyteller based out of NYC and originally from Phoenix\, AZ. Matt created and performed two one-person shows “Portly Lutheran Know-It-All” about his time attending a religious middle school and “Jurassic Heartbreak” about his lifelong love of dinosaurs. He has also been featured on NPR. Matt brings his legal background to the stage with his sharp stories and esoteric comedy. Matt Storrs is a humor person. \nTristan Miller\nTristan Miller is an award-winning actor\, writer\, and comedian who has been featured in The Midwinter Madness and Laughing Devil Festivals\, along with The Minnesota and Kansas City Fringe Festivals. Tristan uses their sardonic wit and goofy midwestern sensibilities to lighten many heavier topics\, such as mental health\, religion\, identity\, and American politics.
