DESCRIPTION:Mirror embroidery\, also known as shisha or abhla bharat\, is a traditional embroidery technique that incorporates small mirrors or reflective metal pieces into fabric. From the desert lands of South Asia (Gujarat\, Rajasthan\, Sindh) this intricate art form adds a distinctive sparkle to textiles amongst the arid landscape. This technique not only adds visual interest but also symbolizes protection and warding off evil spirits in their respective tribes and communities. \nIn her practice\, Nikita Shah has used the technique with varied round reflective objects\, such as discarded watch batteries and leftover coins from travels\, where she weaves tradition with sustainability. Through Shah’s instruction\, Third Thursday attendees will use materials from MFTA’s warehouse to practice this traditional embroidery.

DESCRIPTION:Queens Film Festival is proud to announce its launch for our inaugural year of 2024. \n\nQueens Film Festival is a local 501(c)(3) non-profit run by local filmmakers highlighting the next generation of filmmakers celebrating the strong diversity of Queens from the art of filmmaking to its history and the evolution of storytelling. \n\nWe aim to expand recognition of what we feel is the greatest borough in New York City. By running the local filmmaker’s platform of opportunities by expanding the local film network by showcasing films that carry riveting and thought-provoking stories. The festival hopes to expand economic development and be a cornerstone of visionary commitment towards this end and a principal resource to artists and the community of Queens at large. \n  \nOur festival may be new and entering its first year\, but that won’t stop us from pushing forward the envelope of storytelling mediums in the local film community as we are inspired by innovative ways for others to experience the stories we curate hoping to create a more empathic world around us. The themes of renewal and transitoriness continue to play a major role in the social and creative fabric of the Queens Film Festival as we continue to promote the amazing borough of Queens that is melded between states of old and new.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Himalayan Art Exhibition\, opening on September 5th at Culture Lab LIC. We are honored to present a rare dialogue between the ancient tradition of Thangka art and contemporary artistic expression. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity for New Yorkers and international guests alike to witness the work of renowned Thangka masters such as Danba RaoDan\, Kaduo Danping\, Dazhe Duoji alongside acclaimed contemporary artists like Zhuangxin Pei and Gyatso Rinpoche. Our gratitude extends to Kaduo Danping Thangka Art Studio for entrusting us with this exhibition\, and to the Overseas Chinese Artists Association for their continued collaboration. \n  \nThe Buddha taught 84\,000 methods to address the countless afflictions faced by sentient beings\, guiding them toward liberation and wisdom. This wisdom is not just found in scriptures but is also deeply embedded in Thangka art\, sculpture\, architecture\, music\, and dance—cultural practices that have protected and enriched the people of the Snowy Plateau for centuries. These practitioners dedicate their lives not for their own enlightenment but for the well-being of all beings\, reciting prayers that carry hopes for compassion\, kindness\, and wisdom. \n  \nTitled Eighty Four Thousand and One Questions\, this exhibition invites you to explore the mystical world of Tibetan culture and its artistic expressions. If you have a significant question for the Buddha\, ask it here—selected questions will be answered by the Tibetan Artists who have profound knowledge of Thangka and Tibetan Buddhism.
