SUMMARY:Flora The Red Menace
DESCRIPTION:Forager Theatre Company is thrilled to present Kander & Ebb’s first musical\, an historic and rarely-produced tale\, “Flora the Red Menace.” Premiered in 1965\, it was a unique bridge between political FTP shows of the 1930s\, the musical comedies of the Golden Age\, and the darker\, thornier concept musicals of the late 20th century. Utilizing an exciting\, eccentric score\, it explores labor rights\, class divides\, the power of community\, female self-actualization\, and the importance of young individuals developing their own moral compass.  \nComing off their acclaimed in-the-round production of “tick\, tick…BOOM!” last year\, seen at The New Ohio in NYC and Kitchen Theatre Company in Ithaca\, NY\, Forager will present a similarly fresh\, innovative\, and excavating take on this classic. It will feature a wall-sized mural designed specifically for this production by artist Tanya Gupta\, as well as numerous other exciting production elements.  \n“Flora the Red Menace” has music by John Kander\, lyrics by Fred Ebb\, the original 1965 book by George Abbot & Robert Russell\, and a revised 1987 libretto by David Thompson. Its original Broadway first production starred Liza Minelli\, who won a Tony Award for her performance.

SUMMARY:RE-STORY-ATION: ART + ARCHITECTURE
DESCRIPTION:RE-STORY-ATION: ART + ARCHITECTURE \nSook Jin Jo & John di Domenico\, Curated by Soojung Hyun \nMay 3 – May 25\, 2024 \nGallery Hours: Wed – Sat\, 12 – 6 pm \nOpening Reception: Friday\, May 3\, 6-8 PM \nARTEGO Gallery 32-88 48th Queens NY 11103  \nARTEGO Gallery is proud to present “RE-STORY-ATION: ART + ARCHITECTURE\,” an innovative exhibition that navigates the intertwining of architecture and art through the works of two distinguished artists/architects\, Sook Jin Jo and John di Domenico. The exhibition spreads drawings\, photographs\, paintings\, and video documentaries\, including three- and four-dimensional expressions. By introducing the dynamic interplay between their works\, the exhibition seeks to push the boundaries of each artist's practice while exploring the profound meaning of art and its intrinsic connection to humanity. \nThe term of 'Re-story-ation' centers around the idea of envisioning and constructing the narratives of our lives. Enriching narratives through recontextualization can broaden human understanding and empathy. The exhibition "Re-story-ation" employs the convergence of 'architecture and art' as a framework for this storytelling endeavor. At its core\, "RE-STORY-ATION: ART + ARCHITECTURE " celebrates the unique perspectives and creative insights of Sook Jin Jo and John di Domenico. di Domenico's distinctive paintings and drawings\, showcased alongside his impressive architectural projects such as Fernow Hall at Cornell University\, the Silver Line Washington DC Metro\, Stillwell Avenue Station at Coney Island\, and subway stations in Astoria\, New York\, exemplify his seamless integration of art and architecture. Meanwhile\, Jo's thought-provoking art chapel projects in Nicaragua\, Guatemala\, and El Salvador\, along with her captivating artworks and documentaries\, are presented here.  \nWith over four decades of experience in both fields\, John di Domenico perceives creating architecture and painting as intricately intertwined. His paintings\, starting as doodles\, evolve into colorful compositions\, blurring the line between representation and abstraction. The process of making paintings serves as the cornerstone of his storytelling\, reflecting his ideas about space and its inhabitants. Through his artwork\, John di Domenico imbues his architectural designs with empathy and profound insight into the human experience. \nSook Jin Jo shares an intimate relationship with both architecture and installation art. Her installations\, including her captivating chair pieces\, capture the essence of human presence within intimate and contemplative environments. Furthermore\, her projects to construct spaces for prayer and contemplation incorporate the cultural backgrounds of local communities\, blurring the boundaries between architecture and art. For Sook Jin Jo\, every aspect of her creative process\, from sketches to media presentations of architectural projects\, exists within the realm of art. \nSook Jin Jo \nSook Jin Jo is an accomplished multidisciplinary artist with over four decades of experience. Her expansive work encompasses drawings\, installations\, performances\, and architectural endeavors. Jo's artistic prowess has been showcased on the global stage through over forty solo exhibitions\, including prestigious venues such as Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer\, Minnesota\, the Seoul Museum of Art for "SeMA GOLD 2014: Nobody" in Seoul\, Korea\, and the Huntington Museum of Art for the "Walter Gropius Master Artist Series" in Huntington\, West Virginia. Additionally\, she has participated in numerous group exhibitions\, earning recognition through esteemed awards\, fellowships\, and commissions. Her works can be found in prominent public collections worldwide\, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea\, the LA Metro Detention Center in Los Angeles\, California\, and the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse in Miami\, Florida. (https://www.sookjinjo.com/bio05.htm) \nJohn di Domenico \nJohn di Domenico is an artist and architect known for exploring the interplay between visual and spatial design. Di Domenico graduated from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy. He serves on the Boards of the New York Transit Museum and Coney Island\, USA. In 2013\, he was awarded the Sydney L. Strauss Award from the New York Society of Architects for outstanding achievement for the benefit of the architectural profession. Di Domenico's architectural work focuses on innovation and sustainability\, spanning transit infrastructure\, education\, and community spaces. Among his notable achievements are his instrumental role in the establishment of the High Line in 1984 and his collaboration with Vito Acconci in 2003 for the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium Station. These endeavors stand as shining examples of di Domenico's exceptional research and dedication to enhancing urban infrastructure. (https://www.didomenico.nyc/about) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Studio 41 Spring/Summer Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends and Neighbors at Studio 41’s Opening of the Spring/Summer Art Exhibit \nWe are honored to present the original work of nine local artists. \nStudio 41 was founded as a collective to bring people closer to art and artists. The gallery is in a unique setting—the working studio of printmaker Dianne Martin. You will always find several of the artists from the collective in the gallery when we are open. Look for them at the etching press\, at an easel\, or leading a workshop. \nStudio 41's seasonal group exhibits provide the community an opportunity to discover and support talented local artists. Making art accessible to all is a founding principle of the collective. From paintings\, prints\, and photography to ceramics\, sculpture\, and jewelry\, the work is priced affordably. \nStudio 41 extends a warm welcome to everyone. Whether you are an artist\, art collector\, art lover\, or simply curious\, we hope you will visit. Seeing the work in a home studio provides a rare glimpse of how it might look in your living space. \nStudio 41 is free and open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 1–5.

SUMMARY:Cacao and Drawing Ritual at Ofrenda Fest
DESCRIPTION:Cacao and Drawing Ritual with Sarah Vaccariello\nJoin us on Saturday\, May 4th\, for a unique Cacao and Art Release Ceremony. We will connect with the sacred medicine of Cacao\, tune into our bodies\, and let go of any energies that no longer serve us. \n  \nUtilizing ancient wisdom and the properties of Cacao\, a potent natural medicine\, we can open our hearts. This allows for deeper exploration of our emotions\, introspection\, and significant inner growth. We will begin a journey to transcribe these stagnant energies onto paper\, employing a dynamic blend of automatic meditative drawing and more deliberate\, intentional imagery.  This cathartic energy release frees these energies from our personal sphere\, imprinting them onto the page. In doing so\, we create a void\, which we can then fill with something new\, something we desire. \n  \nThe act of drawing\, or creating with our hands in any form\, is not just an artistic endeavour. It's a potent medicine\, a transformative method that enables us to move energy and enact change from within\, allowing us to transform ourselves from the inside out. \n  \n Through this process\, we not only create art\, but we also sculpt our inner selves\, shaping our future with every stroke of the pen. Asking yourself\, what are you ready to draw into your life? What do you desire to manifest? As we shift our attention and draw from creation and manifestation. \n  \nPainting workshop guided by Sarah Vacariello  \nSarah's work delves into character portraits and spiritual\, natural\, and cosmic realms. Lately\, she emphasizes plant medicines on her canvases\, using her art as a conduit for their visions. She narrates her own and others' stories\, seeing art as a means to channel energy\, assimilate insights and facilitate healing. \n  \nCacao's Invocation facilitated by America Maldonado \nSince 2017\, America embarked on a spiritual journey to reconnect with ancestral traditions. As a documentarian\, she interacted with elders worldwide and discovered Cacao\, sparking her healing process. Inspired by indigenous communities\, she co- create with Reynaldo Castro Ofrenda Fest\, a platform combining Art and Ritual for communal healing and earth reconnection. \nAll materials are provided\, and people of all ages are welcome! \nTickets  got to Ofrendafest.com.:$22-$44  \nJoin us in Ceremony!

SUMMARY:SculptureCenter Spring 2024 Openings
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception celebrating Tolia Astakhishvili: between father and mother and In Practice: Covey Gong. \nTolia Astakhishvili: between father and mother\nMay 9–Aug 12\, 2024\nFor more than two decades\, Tolia Astakhishvili has worked across sculpture\, drawing\, painting\, sound\, and video. At scales that both augment and seemingly disappear into gallery spaces\, Tolia’s environments posit architecture as an unfixed and transforming entity shaped by those who live through it. At the same time\, her sculpture attends to disavowed space and the overlapping markers of use\, authorship\, and social position that produce different settings of decay. \nAt SculptureCenter\, Tolia Astakhishvili: between father and mother considers sculpture as a form of sorting\, and\, by extension\, choosing and dividing. In service of this idea\, Tolia recasts SculptureCenter’s ground floor gallery spaces as a channeling machine\, rigging up two large debris chutes\, a major new commission made possible by Valeria Napoleone XX SculptureCenter (VNXXSC)\, that suggest the mechanism of judgment realized through Tolia’s monumental\, assemblage-laden installations. Throughout the exhibition\, Tolia integrates works from different disciplines by collaborators Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili\, Kirsty Bell\, Katinka Bock\, Dylan Peirce\, and James Richards. Read as singular artworks\, these contributions stand in contrast to the piles of secondhand items\, industrial parts\, refuse\, and construction materials that Tolia meanwhile transforms into representations of found situations: partial recreations of spatial\, psychological\, and object conditions that might exist both here and elsewhere. \nIn Practice: Covey Gong\nMay 9–Jun 17\, 2024\nCovey Gong’s work is attuned to “fluctuating relationships between material goods\, passing from novelty to familiarity\,” in the artist’s words. His recent sculpture has intricately taken stock of such transformations of the everyday via abstract metal armatures\, disused fabrics\, and extra lengths of thread. Building on an artistic interest in the life cycles of objects\, Gong’s work at SculptureCenter expands to a broader perspective on global cultural artifacts and the transpositions of difference achieved through scenography\, architecture\, decoration\, and the costumed body. His new sculptures take as their subject the 1924-26 Giacomo Puccini opera Turandot and the worldwide manifestations of its ornamented\, imaginary imperial China over the last century.

SUMMARY:Music for Healing
DESCRIPTION:Culture Lab LIC is proud to announce the debut of Music for Healing\, by multidisciplinary artist\, Angelica Olstad. Music for Healing is an immersive installation that combines the power of music with science-backed healing modalities. The project – backed by a $10\,000 NYSCA grant – explores new ways to connect through a set of different modalities and practices that explores the installation space as an opportunity to connect through a shared experience.  \n  \n"At Culture Lab LIC\, we believe in the power of art to inspire\, heal\, and unite communities\," said Artistic Director\, Tess Howsam. "With Music for Healing we are thrilled to provide a platform for exploring innovative approaches to wellness that are grounded in scientific research and accessible to all." \n  \nMusic for Healing will be featured as part of the Culture Lab LIC’s forthcoming exhibition\, “Shattered” which focuses on mental health. “The show aims to not only raise awareness for mental health issues but the importance of art as both a healing tool and outlet\,” said Dawn DeVito\, curator of Shattered. \nScheduled to run from May 2nd to June 2\, 2024\, Music for Healing is a unique collaboration between leading scientists\, musicians\, creative technologists\, and artists. Through a blend of soothing audiovisual displays\, filmed content showing people from the community meditating and dancing\, color therapy\, multichannel sound\, and guided audio meditations\, attendees will delve into the transformative potential of sound and music in promoting physical\, mental\, and emotional well-being. Also featured as part of the experience\, is the use of an EEG – an instrument for measuring brain activity in visitors. Once activated\, the EEG will impact the installation environment to create a tailored experience based on each unique visitor’s brain chemistry. This interactivity incentivizes participants to go deeper into the experience. \n  \nThe immersive soundscape that comprises the exhibition was written by Angelica Olstad with the intention of creating healing experiences for visitors. “I wanted to challenge the idea that music for healing needs to sound like you’re in a spa\,” says Olstad. “So I set to work with scientists to figure out the ideal beats per minute (BPM) and other musical characteristics needed to put visitors in a relaxed and healing state.” The resulting fifty-five minute composition is minimalist and introspective\, featuring piano and analog synths. The instrumental piece will be released as a companion piece to the installation as its own album titled\, “Music for Healing: Introspection” which will be available to stream on May 24th. \n  \nOlstad’s music was described as The Wire as\, “Openly appreciative of the constituents of a tradition whil at the same time calling fundamental assumptions into question”. Her musical style is minimalist in nature and often includes unconventional mediums including field recordings\, video art\, analog synths\, and soundscapes.  \n  \n“Music for Healing addresses increased feelings of isolation and loneliness in a post-Covid world\,” said artist Angelica Olstad. “This project is a culmination of my experiences as a community wellness teacher\, classically trained pianist\, and cultural producer. As a mixed-race artist\, I am committed to making wellness and arts experiences more accessible to a wider audience\, specifically\, BIPOC audiences who might not have access to traditional arts and wellness opportunities. My dream is for people to come to this space\, find a comforting place to heal and to want to come back to over and over again..” \n  \nThe artist partnered with a team of highly talented individuals and organizations from Donald Judd inspired pieces\, production at 100 Sutton Studios an Samples from Mars\, movement work by director Elena Vazintaris who’s worked with the likes of Chanel and Dior\, an sponsored by Arts Equity Group. Full credits list can be viewed HERE.  \n  \nIn partnership with Culture Lab LIC\, Music for Healing will also feature community programming through lectures\, live outdoor concerts\, free meditation and yoga classes accompanied by music and educational talks for schools. Programming will be designed with underserved populations in mind. Music for Healing invites visitors of all ages and backgrounds to explore\, engage\, and experience the transformative power of music in a welcoming and inclusive environment.  \n  \nMusic for Healing is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.   \n  \nFor more information on open hours and event information\, please visit Culture Lab LIC at https://www.culturelablic.org \n

SUMMARY:Take Root Presents: Tina Croll + Company & Ani Jav
DESCRIPTION:May 10th & 11th at 8pmAdvance sale tickets: $20 online\nTickets purchased at door: $25 cash or card \nAbout the Works:\nTina Croll + Company\nAncient Springs is inspired by Federico Fellini’s La Strada and poet Kathleen Raine’s Defending Ancient Springs.  Comprised of vignettes— “short stories”— this piece examines abstract and non-narrative methods of storytelling through movement and sound\, a little gavotte\, a twisted convulsive solo\, a stately waltz on some town square.  A chorus of dancers swirls through – sometimes joining in\, sometimes commenting on the action. The music is from various sources including – Tiny Tim\, Glen Velez\, Andy Teirstein\, traditional music from Macedonia\, Getatchew Mekuria\, Lila Downs & Mariachi Juvenil de Tecalitián \nInspired by the Sanskrit saying: ”Sanghe Shakti Kalau Yuge” (In this Dark Age Strength is in Unity.)  Full of intricate spatial patterns and rhythmic contrasts\, the work combines the choreographer’s ongoing interest in Eastern European/Asian folkdance forms.  Some ancient folk dances for women are danced in sublime unison. “She Rides a Tiger” refers to the Hindu goddess Durga\, "The Invincible."  She is the warrior goddess depicted in the Hindu pantheon riding a tiger\, with many arms\, each carrying a weapon. Sensuous and beautiful\, but the fierce form of the protective mother. \nAni Javian and Benjamin Roach\nWhat are our stories and how did they come to be? When The Sky Separated From The Earth asks questions around fantasy and reality\, deception and truth\, and duplicity and multiplicity. When The Sky is a playground\, gym\, town plaza\, church\, bedroom\, stage\, and home. It is loud and out-of-bounds; it is against the rules; it is not exactly true\, but it isn’t exactly false\, either. And it asks\, “How can we trust – in ourselves\, in others\, and in our world?” It works to reveal our humanity – full of faults\, but always with the capacity to listen to our own unique truths and the truths of those around us with compassion\, goodwill\, and heart.

SUMMARY:Tolia Astakhishvili and Kirsty Bell
DESCRIPTION:Writer Kirsty Bell joins artist Tolia Astakhisvhili in conversation on the first weekend of Tolia Astakhishvili: between father and mother\, Tolia’s exhibition at SculptureCenter. \nIn recent years\, Kirsty Bell has been an observer of and participant in Tolia’s work. Her texts have appeared alongside or within Tolia’s recent exhibitions at Bonner Kunstverein and Haus am Waldsee\, Berlin. \nBell’s recent book projects include the indispensable The Artist’s House: From Workplace to Artwork (Sternberg Press\, 2013)\, a wide-ranging inquiry into interrelations of living- and working-spaces that have inflected art practices as diverse as those of Gregor Schneider\, Marc Camille Chaimowicz\, and Alice Neel\, among many others; and Undercurrents: A Story of Berlin (Other Press\, 2022)\, a geographical\, political\, cultural\, and personal history of the city that unfolds across passages of localized attention and elastic historical breadth\, told in parallel to Bell’s coming and going from her own home on the Landwehr Canal. \nThis meeting dips into Tolia’s and Bell’s shared attunement to the resonance (the “shadow existence\,” as Bell has written of Tolia’s work) of buildings\, homes\, and cities. \nKirsty Bell is a British-American writer and art critic living in Berlin. She has published widely in magazines and journals including Tate Etc. and Art in America\, and was a contributing editor of frieze from 2011-2021. She was awarded a Warhol Foundation Grant for her book The Artist’s House\, and her essays have appeared in over seventy exhibition catalogs for major international museums and institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York; Stedelijk Museum\, Amsterdam; and Tate\, London. \nTolia Astakhishvili works and lives in Berlin and Tbilisi. Astakhishvili's recent solo exhibitions include The First Finger (chapter II)\, Haus am Waldsee\, Berlin (2023); The First Finger\, Bonner Kunstverein\, Bonn (2023); I Think It's Closed\, Bielefelder Kunstverein\, Bielefeld (2023).
