SUMMARY:MFTA Gallery: “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing” by Mary Mattingly (Mondays – Fridays)
DESCRIPTION:Materials for the Arts (MFTA) presents “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” a solo exhibition featuring recent work by MFTA Artist-in-Residence Mary Mattingly. As MFTA’s Artist-in-Residence\, Mattingly has had unlimited access to MFTA’s warehouse of donated supplies\, where she has upcycled found objects to create the installations featured in her solo exhibition. Her life-long fascination for water permeates through “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” swallowing the MFTA Gallery whole and leaving its visitors to meditate on the element’s simultaneous capacity to corrode and restore our physical and internal worlds. \nColorful assemblages of objects —pitchers\, books\, pedestals\, ceiling medallions— varying in hues and height create a vibrant tableau. Fabric butterflies\, plastic lemons\, animal figurines made from metal and wood depict naturalistic elements and showcase the dichotomy between natural and synthetic. Unified by the water that courses through them\, these fixtures’ renewal rests within this constant stream that breathes new life into the objects. In turn\, this faint trickle invites gallery visitors to pause and take time\, to sit with water\, listen to it\, emote with it\, and consider all the wisdom life’s longest partner has to share. \nMattingly’s exhibition name\, “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” arose from the artist’s wanderings through the MFTA warehouse where she found a collection of poems written by Alejandra Pizarnik of the same title. \nRead the press release. \nAll Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing” is on view through June 12\, 2026. \nThe MFTA Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9:30am to 4:30pm\, excluding federal holidays. \nMaterials for the Arts\n33-00 Northern Blvd\, 3rd fl.\nLong Island City\, NY 11101 \nImage: Photo by Sefan Hagen.

SUMMARY:Julio of Jackson Heights - Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Pride Month\, join LPAC for a free screening of Julio of Jackson Heights. After the film\, there will be a talkback with filmmaker Richard Shpuntoff and Queens Pride founder/former Council Member Danny Dromm. \nAbout the film:\nOn July 2\, 1990\, Julio Rivera was brutally beaten to death in the P.S. 69 schoolyard in Jackson Heights by three young men looking to “clean up” their neighborhood by “stretching out a gay guy”. The initial reaction to the murder was typical of murders of gay men in Jackson Heights: no coverage by the media\, a low priority investigation from the police\, and no protest from the community at large. \nThis time though\, things would be different. A handful of Julio’s friends formed a coalition with members of Julio’s family and seasoned LGBTQ activists from groups like Queer Nation\, ActUp! and the New York City Anti-Violence Project\, and committed to changing “business as usual”. \nJulio of Jackson Heights tells the story of the political awakening of New York’s largest and\, up to that moment\, most closeted LGBTQ community.

SUMMARY:Weapons of Mass Seduction at Culture Lab LIC
DESCRIPTION:June 11-21 \nUnder an even more Trump-than-Trump president — the bombastic Karen Blare — the United States is waging a “culture war” against its new enemy: woke Canada. Determined to win the fight without casualties (or headlines)\, Blare demands a new kind of non-lethal weapon. Her loyal but dim-witted General Fardmann has the perfect idea: resurrect the long-rumored “Gay Bomb.” \nTo make it work\, they must thaw out Professor. Victor Vexx — a brilliant\, genderfluid chemical weapons scientist frozen since the summer of love in 67 — and assign CIA agent Valerie Steele to keep them in check. \nBut as Vexx sets their sights on sparking a queer revolution from within\, Blare’s administration prepares to test the bomb on a small conservative Southern town. When the plan leaks\, chaos erupts. Glitter flies\, loyalties shift\, and the battle lines between repression and liberation blur in an explosion of camp\, color\, and chemical warfare. \nThis piece detonates a glittery critique of military machismo\, political hypocrisy\, and homophobia — flipping the script so that queer people aren’t the victims of the system\, but the ones who joyfully\, fabulously\, and furiously blow it up from the inside. \nShowtimes & Buy Tickets:\nhttps://www.culturelablic.org/#weapons-of-mass-seduction
